When the first publicity shot of Meryl Streep as the former British prime minister for the biopic The Iron Lady was recently released, we were struck by the resemblance. In the latest images from the set, shot in South London earlier this week, Streep, who is known for her perfectionism, appears to have physically altered herself to become Thatcher.

Check out the images after the jump.

Photos via The Daily Mail:

The images depict PM Thatcher in the midst of a 1980s protest against job cuts and a new poll tax. She is seen talking to protesters, later entering her car and being chased by the unhappy citizens as she is driven away. Inside the car, she appears indifferent to their plight, something the controversial PM was often accused of by her detractors.

We can also see Streep taking a coffee break and Olivia Colman, who plays Thatcher’s daughter Carol, chatting with the film crew.

Jim Broadbent plays Baroness Thatcher’s late husband, Sir Denis Thatcher. Their younger selves will be played by Alexandra Roach and Harry Lloyd. Their son Sir Mark Thatcher will only appear as a voice on the phone.

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia!), The Iron Lady is slated for release at the end of the year.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Iron Lady:

London, 2008. In her well-appointed apartment, the elderly former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher prepares breakfast for her husband Denis, as she has every morning of their married life. It’s not until Margaret’s personal aide bustles in that we see that Margaret sits at the table alone. Denis is alive only in her imagination.

Once described in life as “always present, never there”, Denis is still present for Margaret. Is he a loving memory made flesh? A manifestation of her grief? Or perhaps her conscience, taking her to task?

Locked in the infuriating inaction of retirement and battling ill health, Margaret is ambushed by memories. Fragments of her private life and of her premiership crowd in to her mind and she relives them in vivid detail. As she struggles to maintain her equilibrium, Denis teases and needles her. The struggle, the triumphs, the betrayals – in the end, what did she achieve? When all is said and done, was it worth it?

THE IRON LADY is the story of a woman who came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world. It is a film about power and the price that is paid for power, a story that is both unique and universal.

The storyline has apparently worried some of her friends and supporters, who fear that the 85-year-old baroness will be upset, but Pathé’s managing director Cameron McCracken says the film will be made with “appropriate sensitivity.”

I remember when me mum went on an anti-poll tax march with all the mothers from our community “Maggie, Maggie, Maggie, Out! Out! Out!” because that old witch really was the first real villain of my lifetime.

And now some mediocre Hollywood bimbo’s giving her the sympathetic treatment in the hope it’ll give her Oscar nomination no. 999

    Ignorance, thy name is Hollywood.

“Mediocre Hollywood bimbo”? Meryl? You must be joking. Talk about ignorance mate.

Meryl Streep is one of the great actors of our time, probably within the top five. You’re comment is a sad one. Pathetic really.
