Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the upcoming crime drama The Kitchen, which is based on the DC Vertigo comic book series of the same name. The film is set in 1978 Hell’s Kitchen and revolves around three housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. They're then forced to take matters into their own hands by assuming control of the Irish mafia. The catch, here, is the film stars a pair of unlikely actresses for such a violent, gritty story: Melissa McCarthy and Girl’s Trip breakout Tiffany Haddish. They star alongside Elisabeth Moss, who has plenty of drama experience thanks to starring on one of the best TV shows of all time, Mad Men.

There’s no funny business to be found in this here trailer, and indeed with her stunning turn in Can You Ever Forgive Me? McCarthy really put to rest any concerns she wasn’t a “serious” dramatic actress. Haddish, meanwhile, looks to hold her own as well, and I kind of like the idea of casting unexpected actresses in the roles of women who unexpectedly assume control of the mob. On top of that, this female-fronted crime story marks the directorial debut of Andrea Berloff, who co-wrote Straight Outta Compton.

Check out the The Kitchen trailer and poster below. The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, James Badge Dale, Brian d’Arcy James, Margo Martindale, Common, Bill Camp, E.J. Bonilla, Wayne Duvall, Annabella Sciorra, and Myk Wattford. The Kitchen opens in theaters on August 9th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Kitchen:

“The Kitchen” stars Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “Bridesmaids”), Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”), and Elisabeth Moss (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) as three 1978 Hell’s Kitchen housewives whose mobster husbands are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but a sharp ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia’s matters into their own hands—proving unexpectedly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition…literally.
