I’d be shocked if The LEGO Movie didn’t end up in my top 10 of the year, but I’m prepared to temper my expectations for the sequel since writers/directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord are only returning in a producing capacity, and the screenwriting duties will fall to Michelle Morgan & Jared Stern.  However, I am glad to hear Deadline report that the film’s animation co-director Chris McKay will be directing the film, although it’s unknown if it will be a direct sequel or will expand to focus on LEGO’s popular “Ninjago” line.

For those unfamiliar with McKay, his previous work includes the [adult swim] series Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Titan Maximum.  I’m glad that Warner Bros. is pulling from the original film’s crew for the director, and I’m excited to see what McKay will bring to the table.  For more on McKay, click here for his interview with Steve.  The LEGO Movie sequel will open on May 26, 2017.
