Filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller appear to be taking a bit of a well-deserved breather from the film world at the moment after essentially helming this year’s The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street simultaneously. That both films turned out excellent speaks to their talent and wonderful sense of humor, and it’s no surprise that sequels to both are currently in development. While the extent of Lord and Miller’s involvement in 23 Jump Street is unknown at this time, when it was first announced that The LEGO Movie 2 was in the works, we learned that Lord and Miller would remain involved in the franchise as producers while their animation co-director Chris McKay took point as director. Now word comes that the duo will have a heavier hand in the film, as they have signed on to write the script for the highly anticipated LEGO Movie sequel. More after the jump.
With The LEGO Movie grossing nearly $470 million worldwide in addition to being all-around awesome in general, it seemed like a no-brainer when Warner Bros. announced plans to expand the brand not only with a proper sequel, but also with a Ninjago movie. Initially, Jared Stern and Michelle Morgan were tapped to pen the screenplay for The LEGO Movie 2, and indeed Lord and Miller told us earlier this year that they were breaking the story with Stern, Morgan, and McKay, but Deadline now reports that Lord and Miller have signed on to pen the script for the film.
While McKay was announced as the director of The LEGO Movie 2 earlier this year, Warner Bros.’ LEGO franchise plans have recently become even more ambitious/exciting. The studio announced a couple of weeks ago that it was pushing The LEGO Movie 2 back from 2017 to 2018 and moving forward with a full-on LEGO Batman Movie for release on May 26, 2017, with Ninjago set to arrive in 2016. McKay is now signed on to helm the LEGO Batman film, so it seems unlikely that he will also be directing The LEGO Movie 2 for release the following year, though an official announcement regarding the sequel’s director has yet to be made.
With Lord and Miller agreeing to pen the script for The LEGO Movie 2, one has to wonder if they might also return as directors. Obviously the first priority is getting the script completed, but now that the movie has been pushed back to 2018, they could feasibly squeeze another film in beforehand as a bit of a palate cleanser.
They’re currently working on the fantastic-sounding Fox series The Last Man on Earth with Will Forte, directing multiple episodes and overseeing the script development, but after that it’ll be interesting to see what they choose as their next film project as directors. The guys are on one hell of a roll right now, so whatever it is I will most certainly be first in line to check it out.
