A24 has revealed the first image from the upcoming film The Lighthouse, the highly anticipated new movie from The Witch writer/director Robert Eggers. The debut follows the news that the film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival as part of the Directors’ Fortnight program.

We know next to nothing about the film’s plot, other than the fact that it revolves around a lighthouse keeper named Old and takes place in the 19th Century. Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe fill the two lead roles, as seen in this debut image, and they are rocking some truly tremendous facial hair. It also appears as though Eggers shot the film in black-and-white, which is welcome news.

The Witch burst onto the scene in 2015 as a truly stirring piece of horror cinema. I myself caught the film at its Sundance Film Festival debut knowing absolutely nothing about it, and found myself deeply unsettled and truly disturbed. Eggers displayed a mastery of shot composition, atmosphere, and tension, which makes me doubly excited to see what he’s put together with The Lighthouse.

The filmmaker is already working on another project, a remake of Nosferatu, but it’s unclear how soon that project will get off the ground. For now, it’s great to see The Lighthouse being unveiled at Cannes, which hopefully means the film will be released in theaters sometime later this year.
