First Image of Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer in THE LONE RANGER

by     Posted 2 years, 175 days ago

The first official image from The Lone Ranger has been unveiled. The film had a very public rocky road to production, but filming is finally underway in New Mexico on the big budget adventure pic. This image gives us a look into what director Gore Verbinski has in store for the classic character, and unsurprisingly Johnny Depp seems to have crafted an entirely different Tonto. This iteration has some pretty intense face paint and, naturally, a dead bird on his head. Everyone’s familiar with the stories about how Disney almost fired Depp for his take on Jack Sparrow in the first Pirates of the Caribbean (also directed by Verbinski), so I’ll hold off judgment until we see this Tonto in action. For what it’s worth, I think Armie Hammer looks great as the title character. He’s got that everyman quality and “reassuring sense of justice” feel down pat. Verbinski is a really solid director (Rango was one of the best films of 2011) so I’m pulling for The Lone Ranger to be a fun flick. Despite the ridiculous budget, he’s assembled an impressive cast for the film and I’m eager to see more.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Ruth Wilson, and Helena Bonham Carter. The Lone Ranger opens May 31, 2013.

Here’s the synopsis for The Lone Ranger:

“The Lone Ranger” is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

Are you sure the bird is dead?

  • Ryan

This just gives Native Americans a bad look and name. Tell Depp to remove the KISS makeup and dead bird. Better yet, how about he quits the role, or plays the Lone Ranger, and we give Adam Beach the part.

    • terry

I agree Ryan. The Lone Ranger with his subordinate, Indian sidekick was a class based, roundhouse kick to the natives.
Johnny Depp would have to be a Tonto of the non subordinate variety. Tonto would have to be magnanimous but not an uncle tom. And the antagonist would have to be, IMHO, a threat to both the LR and Tonto or just the LR.
If its the former then we have a duo fighting for two different causes on the same plane. If its the latter then the LR would be seeking out the help of Tonto as a measure of last resort then the two would kick some serious booty!
But given Johnny’e A list status you know he will be the star of the film.
Lets see what them a-holes in Hollywood will do.

VERBINSKI: “I don’t know Johnny, you look an awful lot like Captain Jack. I think we have to change it.”

DEPP: “Okay, no problem.” Depp grabs the nearest prop and sticks it on his head. “Okay, what do you think now? Brilliant, right?”

    VERBINSKI: “Sure, whatever.”

  • Ceren Depp

    It’ll be great!!!

  • Matt

^ When you become one of the most bankable international movie star, I’m sure you’ll actually be able to make those sort of calls. Plus he is part Native American, and said his interpretation would not be distasteful. None of which can be judged by the very first still from the movie.

Taylor Kitch is so motherfucking gritty.

  • Aaron Paul’s Pussy Juice

    Taylor Kitch is so gritty!

If you read accounts of Native Americans at war, they actually did wear prodigious amounts of body/face paint (some black and white, some in color) and elaborate head dresses. Usually not the kind depicted in John Wayne westerns, but still. The sizes and shapes obviously changed between tribes and over time, but Depp’s getup seems much more genuine than the frilly leather chaps worn by the original Tonto.

    • JohnnyDeppiscrazy

Yeah, because carrying a dead chicken on the head is their idea of a good camouflage…

      • static

      • Elitist Prick

Ceremonial dress and/or warpaint is the opposite of camoflauge. The whole point is to be seen. And animal (or human) parts, or perhaps even whole small animals, were part of such getup.

    • Stephanie

Yep. Watch Ken Burns’ documentary ‘The West’ on Netflix. Many of the photographs of the native americans from that time period have them with black and white striped war paint almost identical to what Johnny has here.

  • Robbie

The one thing I wish Gore Verbinski would drop are his tripped out sequences, that single shot does not inspire confidince that he will do this.

  • Robbie

Also, isn’t it slightly insulting that Depp is playing a native american? Might as well just start recasting Micky Rooney for all future asian roles.

    • Stephanie

Not really, Robbie. Johnny Depp has Cherokee blood on both sides. It’s like saying it’s insulting for a part-Asian person to play an Asian person. Also, there was a lot of interbreeding during that time – and even adoptions of whites into tribes. By that point many Native Americans had white blood.

  • mattedscreen

HAHAHAHA!!! No no, I mean it looks great!

  • Boyd Magers

OMG! And I thought Klinton Spilsbury was bad!
Why do motion pictures want to change and destroy legendary characters like the Lone Ranger?

  • snapperhead

    Cool link. Thanks.

But he still looks like Jack Sparrow with a bird on his head.

  • AlexHeyNa

Something tells me he’ll be playing the role a lot like Cap’n Jack. It’s a beloved (and insanely popular) character, and he’s working with the same director he created that character with.

This is gonna be Pirates of the Caribbean, western style. Armie Hammer is the new Orlando Bloom.

  • Phil123

I like Depp but he really does only have one facial expression these days.

  • grittymcgritterson

    Put a bird on it.

  • Kozmyn
  • Hunter

Quit making negative assumptions until we are at least given a trailer. There is no way to determine his character will be similar to Jack Sparrow. Of course they might looks similar its the same damn person playing the roles. No reason to not just give it a chance until we see some footage.

  • BeenBag

The Lone Winklevoss and his trusty cultural stereo type,Rango.

Silver is played by Sarah Jessica Parker & voiced by Jonah Hill.

  • Strong Enough

oh yea thats not offensive at all to native americans smh

  • Strong Enough

so disney is gonna bomb with John Carter and the next big budget movie is this crap?

    Disney lost

  • Ninveh Albazi

Come on guys. Just watch the damn movie first before making any comment.

  • Realistic

This is going to be a hit at the box office – great family entertainment that will do solid business internationally. Domestically it will be a hit, but not as much as internationally. Depp is a huge star in Europe, Asia and the middle east. He is also very popular in Russia, India and China. Depp seems to get a backlash from the US. Perhaps he needs to look more redneck and less red Indian for the yanks to embrace him to their hearts!

A very excited for The Lone Ranger…roll on 2013!!!!!!!

Johnny has without a doubt copied Kirby Sattler’s painting.

  • Realistic

Don Caldwell – great link! Yes he has copied this, imitation is the greatest form of flattery!!!

  • WEV

ha, what’s this, Johnny Depp in another role wearing a load of crap wearing make up, AGAIN? Think thats 2 in a week with the first photo of Depp as a vampire in Burtons newest film also being revealed. Its getting boring, really over rated actor.

Still, this film could be a good bit of fun.

  • keepitreal

WEV get over yourself – that is what Depp does, he wears a mask/make-up/costume. He is the modern day Lon Chaney Jr. With out it – Depp sucks (see The Tourist and Nick of Time for proof).

    Tonto looks great.

    Great with the program.

It seems like a big mistake to take such a great story from the original version and change the entire dynamics of the 2 characters.
There is a reason why it’s was called the “Lone Ranger”. The character played by Clayton Moore was the “Lead”. Now they want to ruin it by making Tonto the “Lead”,,, That would be fine if you want to do a “spin off” and have Tonto go on his own and find a new “silent” partner. This will be just another “joke of a remake” like what someone did when they did a remake of Starsky and Hutch
