Prepare thyselves: The Lonely Island movie is officially on the way. Universal Pictures announced today production began this week on “Top Secret Untitled Lonely Island Movie,” starring the Lonely Island trio Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone. Schaffer and Taccone are co-directing the movie, which means the collective behind-the-camera talents of the people who brought us the brilliant MacGruber and Hot Rod are at the helm of the Lonely Island feature.

While the press release only says that the film will take place in the world of music, THR goes one further by revealing that the project skewers the recent trend of fluffy music documentaries like Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Katy Perry: Part of Me. The central focus will be on “a rapper whose latest album bombs and he must do the unthinkable: a reunion concert with his former boy band.”

Judd Apatow is producing the picture, and regarding the venture he noted, “I have begged these fine gentlemen to allow me to produce one of their films since day one, and finally they decided my whining needed to come to an end.”

Joining the Lonely Island behind the scenes is director of photography Brandon Trost, who has quickly become a burgeoning talent in the world of cinematography with his work on the comedies Neighbors and This Is the End. A release date for the pic has yet to be set, but it will likely arrive sometime next year. Judging by the logline and first-look teaser poster below, this thing is going to be great.
