One of the greatest gifts I’ve received this holiday season is today’s news that I’ll only have to wait four months to get The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy on Blu-ray.  Video Business reports that the nine-disc set will go on sale on April 6, 2010 and include the theatrical versions of The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, seven hours of special features (albeit mostly features that were on the original versions), digital copies of each film, and BD-Live access.  The set will retail for $99.98.  A couple weeks ago, Peter Jackson told Steve that he wasn’t sure if the Blu-rays would include both the theatrical versions and the extended editions but he was fairly sure it would just be the theatrical versions on the first release.  Presumably, this means that Warner Bros. Home Video is already prepping the extended edition blu-rays for a later release.  There’s no word on when we we would see those but as long as I know when the the theatrical editions are coming out, I’m set.  No need to get greedy.

Since the set doesn’t come out for another four months, you’ll have time to save up for a Blu-ray player, a nice HDTV, and enough food so you don’t have to leave your house once you start watching these films in HD.  Happy Holidays!

    2 things here,
First, i HATE the idea of milking it AGAIN with 2 versions. We only need the Extended cut on bluray! Bluray should be the difinitive version of the film!

Secondly, it has just been announced that TOBY MCQUIRE is possibly playing BILBO. (a decision i’m happy with)

But, I think they should correct a scene in Fellowship, the scene from The Hobbit where young Bilbo finds the ring. They should reshoot that scene with Toby so it blends in better. Then just add that to the bluray, then thats how it will be remebered as forever.

Im really surprised anyone is excited for this on its own. It is a good indication that the extended cuts are coming to blu-ray sooner rather than later but thats all it is good for. I love the films but why would anyone buy the theatrical releases on Blu-Ray, when we know they’ll release the extended editions a few months or a year at the most later. I already have the movies on DVD so its not like I have to buy these because I just have to see the films again. Re-buying Blu-rays is begrudgingly paying for a movie you already own because you will be getting the ultimate experience and editions, but that is not what these editions provide.

LOL, Blu-rays aren't that expensive. The average price of a new Blu-ray is 20 bucks now. (not at Best Buy, but definitely on amazon.com) and you can get a new Blu-ray player for around 100 bucks. The gripes can cease now, FFS.
