It's out with the old and in with...the old. The CW is calling curtains on their long-running vampire saga The Vampire Diaries after its 8th and final season, but they're looking to stay in the blood-sucking business -- and not just through the TVD spinoff The Originals.

The network has landed a series adaptation of the 1987 cult film The Lost Boys from Veronica Mars and iZombie creator Rob Thomas, Gulfstream TV, and Warner Bros. Television. A re-imagining of Joel Schumacher's film, Thomas' spin on the series has huge plans for a seven-season run that explores what it means to be immortal, spanning 70 years, with each season chronicling a decade.

Season one will be set in San Francisco during the Summer of Love, 1967. Each season, the humans, the setting, the antagonist and the story all change — only the vampires, our Lost Boys, who like the Peter Pan characters never grow up, remain the same.

The concept is a major shakeup on the original film, which starred Jason Patric and Corey Haim as a pair of brothers who square off against a gang of vampires led by Kiefer Sutherland's David, but it's a damn good idea for a vampire TV show. It's par for the course for a new tv show or film to be modelled around a brand name IP without holding faithful to the source material (12 Monkeys is some of the best sci-fi on television right now, but outside the basic concept, it couldn't have less to do with Terry Gilliam's film), so I've got no problem with that, and it comes from the mind of the man responsible for Party Down on one of TV's most full-throttle genre networks, so I'm pretty much all-aboard this crazy train.
