Bryan Fuller has spent the better part of the last decade creating some of television’s finest entries into the fantasy genre: Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Pushing Daisies — just a fantastic track record. It looks like the next stage of Fuller’s career will return him to the harder science fiction he dabbled in during early stints on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.
EW reports that Fuller will adapt the John Christopher novel The Lotus Caves for Syfy. Set on a moon colony in 2068, the narrative revolves around two boys who discover a series of caves ruled by “a super intelligent plant-like being.” The nature of the format is unspecified, though Syfy often likes to develop miniseries as backdoor pilots with the option to turn it into a weekly series if successful (think Battlestar: Galactica). Walden Media announced a feature adaptation in 2007, though there have been no updates since then, so it seems unlikely to cause any problems for Fuller’s take on the material.
