Christopher Nolan has begun to meet with directors for the upcoming Superman reboot, The Man of Steel. The short list of possible directors includes Tony Scott (Man on Fire), Matt Reeves (Let Me In), Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles), Duncan Jones (Moon), and Zack Snyder (Watchmen). Not much is known about the film other than Nolan will be serving as a “godfather” to the project and that David Goyer has written the script for the film, which addresses the character of Superman in a modern context. Hit the jump for my thoughts on these choices.
When I heard Nolan speak at the LAFF this year, the director listed Tony Scott as one his biggest influences. The director made it clear that he strongly admires Scott’s work and it makes sense why he would approach Scott about directing The Man of Steel. Having said that, I really hope that Scott is not chosen to helm the film. Just imagining a Scott-directed Superman movie gives me a headache.
As for the other choices, I guess I’m fine with them. Reeves’ presence on the list excites me since I loved Cloverfield and I’ve heard nothing but excellent things about Let Me In. I am also a big fan of Duncan Jones’ Moon — seeing his name on the list makes me happy. I know that Snyder’s adaptation of Watchmen had its fair amount of haters, but I was a fan and I’m sure Snyder would make a very slick and epic Superman film. The only director I don’t have an opinion about is Liebesman, since I haven’t seen anything that he’s done so far. Liebesman also seems like the most unlikely choice since he just signed on to direct Clash of the Titans 2.
Deadline reports that Nolan will submit his choice to the studio within the next few weeks. For those of you that don’t know, Warner Bros. has to start production and get The Man of Steel made before 2013. If the studio fails to do that, they lose the rights to the iconic character. Because of this, I’m sure we will know more details about the project soon. In the meantime, please tell us who you would like to see direct the film in the comments below.

duncan jones ftw
duncan jones
I’m going to trust Nolan on this. Hes never disappointed me and i don’t expect him to with The Man of Steel
I’d have to go with Duncan Jones. I really hope Snyder doesn’t get the job because, while he has made some good films I don’t think his style would be right for Superman. I’d much rather see a Superman done with more traditional special effects than Snyder’s very digital style.
Agreed, especially with Nolan as godfather. I’m hoping/expecting a grittier, more realistic (well, as realistic as an alien superhero can be), possibly darker Superman film. While I really admire and love much of Snyder’s work (I loved Watchmen, and felt he was perfect for that adaptation), his previous adaptations from the comic book world have had a style that seems to emulate the visual look and feel of a graphic novel. I just don’t see that approach for this Superman film.
NO NO NO!!!! I’m tired of all these superhero flicks going “dark”! Superman is not a dark character. It would be wrong to see this happen. Batman is dark, whereas the man of steel represents all that is good and justified about humanity, even if he is an alien himself.
Matt Reeves
definitely Duncan Jones. (Tony Scott? seriously). Jones’s Moon amazes me and really looking forward to his Source Code and him directing Man of Steel seems the perfect choice from all of the other directors mentioned. Zack Snyder, yeah,Watchmen WAS good but still. the only possible choice for me is still Duncan Jones or maybe even Matt Reeves. or..Nolan could have just screw all of them and go for his brother, Jonah, which still remain high in my list of who should direct man of Steel.
Duncan Jones
Duncan Jones gonna need one hell of a second director.
Christopher Nolan. Stop being a bitch and step up. Everyones sayin Duncan cause he’d have an interesting take but no ones willing to acknowledge the elephant in the room. Superman deserves the best and nobodys done a better job with superheroes than the aforementioned.
Michael Bay!
That rendering looks as if it were stolen from a Doc Savage pulp magazine cover.

zack snyder would own as the superman director
Dunan Jones, Zach Snyder, and Matt Reeves would be my top choices.
My dream team would be
Director: Neill Blomkamp
SUPERMAN/CLARK KENT: Matthew Goode
LOIS LANE: Eva Green
BRAINIAC: Johnny Depp
It depends which Tony Scott we’re getting. If it’s the Tony Scott who made The Hunger and True Romance, I say sign him up quick. If it’s the more recent version that brought us the over-caffeinated Domino then move towards Duncan Jones at the double!
Domino was one of the worst pieces of shit I’ve ever seen. I just needed to join in on trashing it lol
Get Zack Snyder for this film. Duncan doesn’t have the experince.

…but he has the talent, which we can’t say about Snyder.
He has the talent to make an indie film on an indie budget. Blockbusters are different creatures entirely. Saying that I very much enjoyed Moon and maybe after a few more films I am sure he will get his chance!

Duncan Jones did an astounding piece of work with Moon, and I’d be really excited if he got the job! Oh well, at least I hope they don’t pick Snyder. Everything he does sucks ass.
i´d say tony scott, just to follow the british tradition, in the other hand i would like snyder for this film, i dig his style. plus, i really hope they finally get rid of the classic superman theme and make a totally new, epic theme.
If they lose John Williams’ epic theme and replace it with some generic Hans Zimmer dirge, I have zero interest in this. The one thing you can’t change is Williams’ music – it is simply the greatest superhero theme of all time. Change anything and everything else, but keep the music, for crying out loud!
To be fair, Williams’ theme was for a different movie. Just like Elfman’s Batman theme was for a Burton occupation. As was Goldenthal’s own. Nolan’s take on the franchise, along with that the chosen director, might be extremely different, thus would require a different theme.
My point is that it’s impossible to improve upon it. And how do we know that it’s for ‘a different movie’ yet, when we know nothing about the new Superman film beyond rumour? Williams’ Superman theme IS Superman, and if it doesn’t fit tonally with the new film, then the new film will not be faithful to the spirit of the character and that is a bigger cause for concern.
Also, Goldenthal’s Batman theme wasn’t a patch on Elfman’s either – it was a big mistake abandoning it (one mistake among many in the Schumacher era!).
Reading comprehension 101 – Actually reading what the poster (I) wrote:
“Nolan’s take on the franchise, along with that the chosen director, might be extremely different, thus would require a different theme. ”
My point is that, just like Joel Schumacher’s version of Batman required a different take from Goldenthal, and Nolan’s version with Zimmer/Howard, (with each iteration being a distinct take from one another), the Superman theme isn’t and shouldn’t be definitive to all adaptation. The point isn’t to improve on it, but to provide the thematic equivalent for each adaptation. All of the Superman movies post Donner version (including Singer’s own) were in the same universe, with the same actor which allow Williams’ melody to be the glue.
For you to handicap any new Superman movie, headline by a different (distinct?) vision and with a different superman all together, via Williams’ thematics, is frankly closeminded and retarded.
wow, ken, anyone who does not recognizes alex ross´s superman cannot call himself a comic book fan.
Jones, Snyder and Reeves seem the best fit. If Snyder gets the job there will be a lot of fan boy bitching but it seems time that a drastically different sort of Superman movie gets made (be that stylistically or in terms of story who knows but Snyder’s style would certainly be an interesting update.)
TOny Scott obviously. I know Nolan wouldn’t give it to him if TOny was going to make a music video style (Domino) movie. I’m sure we would get True Romanc/Revenge Tony Scott.
Either way they are all interesting choices. Except Liebseman.
If not Snyder, then Duncan Jones would be a bold choice to helm it. Hell, he could get his dad (David Bowie) to work on the soundtrack. How cool would that be?
I seriously hope its Duncan Jones… I mean obviously Nolan himself should be doing this… and then making a bridge to make batman vs. superman… but of course hollywood has its share of politics.
I doubt it’s politics – it could be very possible (and even probable) Nolan just doesn’t want to direct a Superman movie.

oh and John Hamm for superman… PERIOD.
I like how you’re just perpetuating the meme of the internet.
I was really hoping his brother Jonah would direct.

I’d be down with Snyder or the Good Scott (hopefully the new Aliens will get him back in the right direction). Not sure about Reeves or Duncan only seen 1 of their movies, although they were good, I need to see more material.
Just glad to see the movie get rolling, thx Nolan!!
end of line
duncan jones..nuff said
duncan jones..nuff said
i’d say Matt Reeves first then Duncan Jones. it seems Reeves is one of the “Blompkamp” this decade(if you know what i mean).
plus. you want a new Superman theme that may be equally hummable if not better, Michael Giacchino can provide that for you.
Who??? better? Yeah, let’s see who remember’s ANY of Michael Gia…blah blah blah music in 25-30 years….
i’ll take up your challenge any day of the freakin week. Giacchino’s score for “Up” will be remembered forever! A montage like that will be watch and cheerished for years to come. and the most memorable thing about that Montage is Michael Giacchino’s score. plus his Ratatouille’s Score is one of the best “parishian” score on film. The name might not stick, but his musical score will!

Just like how “hummable if not better” his Star Trek theme was? Goldsmith, on his worse day (i.e. Nemesis) was able to provide a more hummable theme than Giacchino was able to muster.
Director = Stephen Norrington.
Superman = Brandon Routh
Matt Reeves.
How about James Cameron?….wait, 2013?… never mind. Maybe Aquaman…

One problem with Superman is that in all movies we see him weakened by a little piece of green glass- actually – it is quite stupid. In all his movie this is about 30 minutes of the film. Can he just walk, jump, remove grasp or throw the little thing away from him? We need a movie that shows Superman kicking butt, saving people, saving the planet. Several directors can do this right. Superman/Clark is a happy simple guy, not much for a director to work with- what’s left- action with a few comedy spots.
honestly…ive been sorely dissappointed with the efforts since the first C. Reeve’s superman. Personally, considering the technology they already have now (era after Avatar) there’s definitely so much potential considering Superman can pretty much do anything.
If they can just think outside the box for a moment; dont reinvent the mythology of superman, instead, make it a period piece set circa 1950′s (when Superman was conceptually thought of to begin with).
Point? In this era of internet and Ipods, nothing fascinates us anymore, there’s no magic such as the slogan of the original Superman teaser “would you believe a man can fly?”
however, set the scene in 1952, superman swoops down Metropolis for the first time, and you transport the audience to the wonder of how people would react to seeing a superhero for the first time.
There’s so much more meat into a project that, hopefully with Christopher Nolan’s ‘inception’, can achieve with a strong, almost realistic story (if that’s even possible), without the need to take a so called dark aproach ala Batman Begins.
that is how i would re create Superman. Because nowaday’s everything’s been there, done that. Let’s face it, we’re too jaded to even care. Shock us with something original without compromising the myth.

Get your facts straight man!
Jones’ Moon BLEW CHUNKS. I had the whole thing figured out twenty minutes into the film, and Jones’ lack of grasp of basic SF issues like gravity and its effect on his scenes shows he doesn’t understand the subject. Comics aren’t SF, but they do have their own whole canon to themselves, and if Jones can’t appreciate the realistic things he screwed up in Moon (which any bright HS physics student can detail) then how’s he going to treat the unrealism of a comic adaptation…?
Matt Reeves
My vote is for Sam Worthington as Superman!
Yes! Superman with a buzzcut and appalling accent – great choice!
I don’t really know who to choose to direct it but I’d love TOM WELLING playing the main character, he is great actor and knows the character more than anyone else!
How is no one seeing the Reeves – Reeve connection here?
How is no one seeing the Reeves – Reeve connection here?
Tom Welling is the only one that looks like Superman. Good lord anything else is simply stupid. Yes by all means select the lead by how well he looks in the director’s hot tub (we’re looking at you Singer) . Everyone knows that Singer selects the dudes he wants to bone. Keep his wrinkled fingers off this one.
Which is different from heterosexual directors’ motivations how, exactly? Most filmmakers chose actors they (theoretically) either want to be or be with. I’m tired of everyone bringing up Singer’s sexual orientation whenever they want to rip into him.
Funny how you say that when Singer was rumored to want Welling for Superman Returns.
Duncan Jones i guess…. but then they all have the right chins for it a_a” i guess add Jay Leno to the list ?
I could’ve seen him choosing RIDLEY Scott as one of his influences, but Tony’s a bit hit-and-miss, and a little too big on the popcorn flicks. I liked Watchmen, but everything else by Snyder is just a little too contrived and focused on visuals in a graphic novel style – great for some things, not for Supes. but…
Duncan Jones with Jon Hamm would rock my socks
here’s a thought. work on a completely different movie and drop superman. he’s already had enough movies. go with a wonder twins movie or something that hasn’t been on the screen at all or very little
Superman was done perfectly back in 78′ when Donner directed it with a screenplay by notable superscribes such as Mario Puzo and Leslie Newman.
So I am besides myself as to why the fuck you people think we need a remake of this film, again.
IMHO todays the young writers today don’t have a tenth of the talent as the old school. Call me a snob but I stand by my rhetoric. The Brandon Routh remake was a complete shit hole.
And who would be the bad guys this time around? The Muslim extremist trying to bring down America? GTFOOH!
I say leave well enough alone.
That’s my 2 cents.
Respect.
Wait, people really WANT zack “owls of ga’hoole” snyder?
his only redeemably piece of work is dawn of the dead(and that is on remake status)
300 only like a step up from James Cam’rom’s work.
I wish Jones or Blomkamp would have got it.
I would LOVE to see a Duncan Jones take on Superman.

Zach Snyder, the way he bought 300 and Watchman to life makes me trust him. But if not him, I loved Moon, just bought it tonight actually, so Duncan Jones would work. Darren is the biggest risk reward of the bunch, if he could make his style and Superman come together right, it would be epic, if it goes south, then Superman Returns won’t look so bad.
