Ridley Scott made a triumphant return to form last year with The Martian. The Matt Damon-led sci-fi picture was a critical and commercial hit, earning 7 Academy Award nominations and big bucks at the box office. With the June 7th Extended Edition release on the horizon, 20th Century Fox has revealed a slew of bonus features, including an extended cut featuring 10 minutes of new footage not shown in theaters and more than two hours of behind the scenes extras.

While The Martian was already a pretty lengthy film at just under 2.5 hours, but it's also a fantastic film that earns its length, so I don't begrudge the idea of an extended cut. Especially when there's 10 minutes -- a reasonable amount that points to some interesting additional sequences without indicating an overindulgence on the director's part. Add to that the fact that Ridley Scott has a history of superior directors cuts, and I'm officially curious. Back when The Martian hit theaters, Steve spoke with the director and he teased some deleted scenes that filled out some intimate details of Mark Wattney's time on Mars, so most likely we can expect the additional footage to color in some nuance.

In addition to the new footage, the extended edition also includes an audio commentary from Scott, screenwriter Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, as well as some sciency goodness including a documentary on the science behind recreating Mars, interviews with NASA engineers and specialists, and a Q&A panel discussion about NASA's real-life plans for the journey to Mars.

The Martian arrives on Digital HD, DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on June 7, 2016. Check out the specs below.
