Last night, the first image from 20th Century Fox’s The Martian landed online, giving us our first look at Matt Damon in director Ridley Scott’s upcoming thriller. Now, an official version of that photo plus a few other images from the film have been released online. Based on Andy Weir’s self-published 2012 novel of the same name, the movie revolves around an astronaut who finds himself stranded on Mars after he is injured and presumed dead by his team. With limited resources and a finite amount of time before his oxygen runs out, Mark Watney (Damon) must use the power of science to keep himself alive on the red planet.

Speaking with Empire, Scott says he thinks of The Martian as “a 21st century Robinson Crusoe." Indeed, comparisons to Crusoe and the more recent Cast Away are inevitable, but Scott has filled out the film with a stellar supporting cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, and Jeff Daniels, so Damon presumably won't be commanding the entire screentime by his lonesome. Some stunning visuals are teased in these new images, with Scott having shot the film in Jordan in order to recreate the Mars terrain.

The Martian was initially intended to be Drew Goddard’s directorial follow-up to The Cabin in the Woods, but he departed to work on Marvel’s Daredevil and Sony’s now-dead Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six. Regardless, Scott helmed the picture from Goddard’s initial script, and while the filmmaker has been more miss than hit lately, I remain (foolishly?) optimistic about this one.

Check out the new images below, via Empire. The Martian opens in theaters on November 25th and also stars Sebastian Stan, Kate Mara, Donald Glover, Sean Bean, Mackenzie Davis, and Michael Pena.
