New Trailer for THE MONUMENTS MEN Confirms That Nazis Were Just the Worst

     October 10, 2013

A new trailer for writer-director George Clooney’s The Monuments Men is now available.  In addition to fascist ideologies, unfettered immoral scientific experimentation and wanton genocide, Clooney reminds us that the Nazis were out to erase any artistic or cultural evidence of the peoples they conquered.  That simply cannot stand.  While Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds take the fight directly to Hitler himself, Clooney’s Monuments Men, a collection of specialists not unlike those in Ocean’s Eleven, head for the front lines in order to prevent the Nazis from getting their grimy hands on precious works of art.  Compelling stuff, which is why the film made its way to our Most Anticipated list.

Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.  The film also stars Matt DamonCate Blanchett, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, and Hugh Bonneville.  The Monuments Men opens on December 18th.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Monuments Men:

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, The Monuments Men is an action-thriller focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners.  It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed?  But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind’s greatest achievements.

Well, actually Nolanites have now surpassed Nazis as the face of facism.

they might even notice that (if indeed the music in the trailer is the score) “Time” from the Inception soundtrack has been ripped off again (from 1:15).

      • milo

Trailer music is rarely the same stuff that ends up in the final score. And music from existing movies isn’t “ripped off”, they are happy to license those tracks to trailers and some cuts are used over and over.

Does Godwin’s Law apply to discussions about something that is about actual Nazis?

I’m still unsure on this. That cast is amazing but these trailers just are not to hot. I still have it pegged as a possible Best Pic nominee, but not a ceartain one.

So that makes Hollywood’s 10,000th movie about the Nazis, yet still not one about The Red Terror, Stalin’s Purges, or The Great Leap Forward. There are still many new stories to be told that we haven’t yet been shown on the big screen.

    • Leo Spaceman

Well to be fair, with my American Education the only thing I recognize about all of those is Stalin. He was an evil Russian or something right? I know Hitler, Hitler was bad.

Were the Red people those evil Chinese sons of B**ches? I think that had something to do with the IronMan’s mortal enemy being the Mandarin, but the movie didn’t really explain that very well.

There are like 10,000 Nazi movies so I know that Hitler is bad and therefore I can easily follow this plot.

Nice Movie. America “rescue” art. My history-lesson told me that 95 % of this “treasure” must be in shelters and caves, to save it. Allied bombing airplanes destroyed the rest. A tiny bit were burned by NAZIs shure..but not so much, if this movies suggest.
A lot of german rightfull privat owners (not only jews) waiting since 60 years for there “treasures”. Its nice to say..”the NAZIs destroied it. But the reality shows that in al lot of cases…the russians bunker it too..
And i think Humans over the world are the same. So my feeling is that even a lot of not american -eu-art stuff is in america or..similary to russia…It must not in “Indiana Jones Area 51″ but in a lot of stupid normal forgotten post- safe deposit boxes around the world. It was wartime and so it was how in every war a chaotic anarchy time by the end. Everywhere steal and pic art and other stuff.
Russians, Americans, Brittish and German people…
But…what no one told me….that there was a heroic save action by “Monument Men” that is no real history. Shure there was Paperclip and other actions..but “heroic save of art” was only a part oft this programs..not the main reason of this….Its Hollywood
(Hogan’s Heroes). Enjoy your evening after hard work…but if you will see all the grey-patterns of history you must read books from people “they are there in this time” Not only “german-influenced-books” even not only “us-books” you must read diarys from russian and allied soldiers even more.
Shortly its how us-civil war. If you dont understand the the law of economy of this time between south and north…you never see the steps of going into war of the south-states.
I like Actores like John Goodman. But i dont think to see another Hitler-movie again. Even its not bad that a lot of art is not in the homeland-countrys.. A lot of egyptian stuff of the pharaones only survived all the egyptian wars in paris, london, berlin and so on.
culture art is the heritage/legacy of all mankind futures. No matter in what county or state the stuff is in present. The only important rule is, that this culture art is save and visible in a folks-museum.
I think all important culture of mankind must be in international owned museums hand. Visible for all mankind. Thats heritage of mankind not of any states or company. In this point..the movie has a morality tale.. greetings from Gotha/Germany

Have you actually read The Monuments Men — a history book, not a work of fiction? You might find it more enlightening than your mere perception that this is yet another movie making those poor Nazis look bad.

    • Slop_j30

Who’s stopping you from writing a script about The Red Terror, Stalin’s Purges, or The Great Leap Forward?

  • Sten

Da hab ich richtig Bock drauf! Sorry: looks very promising!

    • master eckhart

      John Goodman make it !

its seems that Bill Murray only had a supporting part in the movie.

Its funny to see movieparts in this caves.
As a child i was there …( the salt-caves of Merkers are open for Tourists)
I never know that John Goodman stands here ;) were i have stand…

This looks a little pretentious and rather twatty. The story of Nazis stealing French art was likely better served in Frankenheimers “The Train” from 1964. And even if that’s not the case, everybody should see “The Train” because it’s an awesome film.

    • Nerdgasm

Ahhhhh so you call this movie twatty and pretentious…not because it is but because you think it’s ripping off something you love. yeah. good point. everyone should listen to you…. or better yet….just fuck off dude.

      • OhDawg

First of all: Eat a dick. Second: That’s NOT what I said. And I honestly hope my being an asshole doesn’t keep you from watching an awesome film. As far as French Resistance movies goes, it’s one of the very best (behind Melville’s “Army of Shadows”, obviously).

    • Um_what

Or, you know, read the book and see that these men were far from “twatty and pretentious.”

      • OhDawg

I can’t see my original reply to you, so I’m writing another one. Apologies if there’s double posting. I didn’t say anything about the men the film was based on, and I’ll gladly read the book. It might actually be in my shelf somewhere because I inherited a lot of WWII books from a relative who passed away a couple of years ago. I’m sure it’s a fascinating story.

  • Colin Christian

Wow! Count me in! That looks amazing, what an amazing cast!

Between these actors I wonder how much they gave to Obama’s reelection campaign.

    • goop

Probably not even a 10th of what the Koch brothers gave to Romney.

      • Strong Enough

        OOO GOT EM!
