[caption id="attachment_608279" align="alignright" width="360"] the-mummy-movie-image-tom-cruise-annabelle-wallis Image via Universal Pictures[/caption] Universal’s The Mummy unleashed a long awaited poster and a full length trailer last week. Showcasing an impressive action sequence in a plane and showing what appears to be Tom Cruise’s character dying in a crash sitting back up in the morgue, The Mummy also teased Russell Crowe’s Dr. Henry Jekyll, who appears to have a large role in the film or at least the rules of this particular cinematic universe. Savvy viewers have also pointed out that the cause of the aforementioned plane crash appears to be bats. Could Dracula be back sooner than we all thought?
Universal also released a two and a half minute behind the scenes look at the making of The Mummy featuring Tom Cruise and Alex Kurtzman. For me, the biggest takeaways were the extensive practical effects and stunts as well as the emphasis on the scares that could and should come along with a Universal Monster movie.
Meanwhile, while speaking to ScreenRant at a trailer premiere event for The Mummy Alex Kurtzman definitively declared that Luke Evans’ Vlad the Impailer would not be returning to the cinematic universe, should that cinematic universe continue in the first place. Kurtzman was very clear in stating that the audience loving the first Mummy movie would be the deciding factor on if the shared monsters universe would move forward saying that they would build the shared universe if the audience wants it.
[caption id="attachment_590192" align="alignright" width="360"] the-belko-experiment-image Image via MGM[/caption] Welcome to Belko Industries. In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogata, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed. Written by James Gunn and directed by Wolf Creek’s Greg McLean, The Belko Experiment stars John Gallagher Jr., Tony Goldwyn, John C. McGinley and Michael Rooker. The Experiment begins on March 17, 2017.
One of the things that got Twitter the most excited last week was the first trailer for Hideo Kojima’s latest gaming endeavor, Death Stranding. The trailer, which according to Kojima contains many hints and misleads, premiered last week and fans were left both intrigued and confused. Featuring characters that looks exactly like director Guillermo del Toro and Mads Mikkelsen, Death Stranding also stars Norman Reedus. Death Stranding is console exclusive to PS4 but will also be available for PC. While the game is still a ways away, it’s fun to speculate and analyze the new adventure.
Another video game property that has got people buzzing is one we discussed just a few weeks back. At the Blu-ray luncheon for Don’t Breathe, producer Sam Raimi was on hand and gave an update on Sony’s feature film adaptation of the popular game The Last of Us. While the cinematic news was unfortunate, fans of the franchise were treated to a big event when the trailer for The Last of Us Part 2 premiered at the PlayStation Live experience. Featuring both Ellie and Joel a few years older and definitely more worse for the ware, it would seem that Ellie is hellbent on revenge, with Naughtydog’s Neil Druckmann explaining that the story is about hate. Cinemablend speculates that fans can anticipate the new game sometime in 2018.
What’s In The Box?!:
[caption id="attachment_564227" align="alignright" width="360"] the-exorcist-tv-show-geena-davis-image-fox Image via FOX[/caption] Finally, we announced last week that Nightmares would be presenting a screening of the penultimate episode of the Fox series The Exorcist right here in Los Angeles this Friday, December 9 at 6:30PM with the creator and cast in attendance. As if that wasn’t exciting enough, we have since confirmed that series star and Academy Award winner Geena Davis will be joining us for the event and the Q&A after! Seating is limited so if you live in the LA area and want to come down, you can RSVP to tcftv.events@fox.com.
Jump Scares: The Autopsy of Jane Doe is a movie that I thoroughly enjoyed from Fantastic Fest a few months back. The movie won Best Horror Feature at Fantastic Fest this year and stars Emile Hirsch and Brian Cox. Now, I went into this movie knowing nothing with the exception of a short synopsis in the Fantastic Fest program: When a mysterious body turns up at a crime scene, the local sheriff turns to the coroner and his son to find the cause of death. Now that the movie is getting a Christmas release from IFC Midnight, a second trailer has been released, and if you ask me, it shows way too much! We talk about it all the time: marketing materials for movies, especially horror, often leave little to the imagination often undercutting the mystery and suspense that makes these movies work.
