Teaser Poster for THE MUPPETS [Updated with High-Resolution Version]

The first teaser poster for Disney’s The Muppets has popped up online, albeit as a blurry and off-center snapshot taken by a fan in Montreal, but that’s better than nothing right? It features the classic characters Gonzo (my personal favorite), Fozzie Bear, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Animal walking out onto what appears to be a stage aglow with spotlights. It’s awesome to have the Muppet gang back, but this picture creeps me out. THEY’RE WALKING, as in with legs — it’s too much too soon.  Hit the jump to see what the Muppets look like in all their anatomically correct glory.

[Update: Disney has released a super high-resolution version of the poster, presumably to make the Muppets appear much closer than you originally thought.]

And here’s the official synopsis:

“On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary (Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino house band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate.”

We’ll have to wait for a trailer to find out whether the Muppet characters will have functioning lower limbs in the actual film. Either way, The Muppets is destined to be a fun time at the cinema come November 23rd. With a cast that includes Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper, Rashida Jones, Zack Galifianakis and Ricky Gervais, how could it not be?

I don’t get what the fuss is about. They walked in the original films…

True, but typically when the legs were moving it was a separate shot of just the legs (which makes sense given that they were puppets). There were wide shots of them full-bodied, always standing still as I recall unless it was Kermit swinging his legs while sitting or something, but here the walking looks so fluid mid-step it threw me off, almost like the legs were CGI’d for the poster.

Doesn’t help that I haven’t watched anything Muppets related for a number of years and the upper torso was always the most prominently featured. Sounds like you guys are much fresher on the subject than I, am I mistaken? Are you excited for the movie?

I’m interested, if only by way of nostalgia and fond memories of the characters. My post wasn’t meant to point fingers, but I’ve seen similar comments on different blogs with this poster image and they all seem confusingly surprised by the full-body shot, when it’s nothing new.

See here! There’s plenty of clips available that are similar…:

Why are people so surprised by this? The Muppets have had functioning lower limbs since the first Muppet Movie back in 1979. Henson worked pretty diligently to create the illusion that they weren’t just puppets you could see from the waist up.

I just can’t wait for the scene when Kermit and the gang busts Animal out of the Anger managment clinic. Oh, and we better get at least a cameo from Beaker!
