RADiUS-TWC has released the first The One I Love trailer for director Charlie McDowell’s offbeat debut.  The film stars Elisabeth Moss and Mark Duplass as a couple on the brink of separation who escape to a vacation house for a weekend getaway.  Soon after arriving, however, they encounter an unexpected discovery that forces them to examine themselves, their relationship, and their future.  This is one of the films I was disappointed to miss at the Sundance Film Festival, as I heard only great things from those that caught it.  Moreover, I was told it’s best to go in without knowing the “twist” to the premise that occurs earlier in the film.  Thankfully, this trailer teases the intriguing story without giving anything away.  I’m definitely looking forward to catching this one next month.

Hit the jump to watch the The One I Love trailer.  The film also stars Ted Danson and will be released on VOD on August 1st and in select theaters on August 22nd.

Here’s the official synopsis for The One I Love:

The highly anticipated debut feature from acclaimed author Charlie McDowell, THE ONE I LOVE is an original tale that continues to showcase McDowell’s keen observations of human relationships with a distinct and comedic voice. THE ONE I LOVE, written by Justin Lader, was produced by Mel Eslyn and executive produced by Mark Duplass, who stars opposite Elisabeth Moss. On the brink of separation, Ethan (Duplass) and Sophie (Moss) escape to a beautiful vacation house for a weekend getaway in an attempt to save their marriage. What begins as a romantic and fun retreat soon becomes surreal, when an unexpected discovery forces the two to examine themselves, their relationship, and their future.

If you really didn’t want to spoil things you might have thought about not mentioning there is a twist at all.

The trailer shows them going into a mysterious room and discussing it at length. Don’t think it’s spoiling it to say *something* happens in there.

One has to wonder if you watched the trailer, since literally everything in the whole 2 minute video alludes to a “twist” and every single quote from critics does the same. Fall back on the spoiler culture.
