The Orchard has released the first The Overnight trailer for writer/director Patrick Bryce’s offbeat sex comedy. The film stars Adam Scott and Taylor Schilling as a married couple who are invited, along with their son, for a playdate and dinner at the house of a couple they just met (played by Jason Schwartzman and Judith Godrèche). After the kids are put to bed, however, a series of awkward situations unfold that put each relationship to the test.

I caught the film at Sundance and it is both very funny and very awkward, complete with a pair of hilariously over-the-top prosthetic pieces worn by Scott and Schwartzman. The movie’s not for everyone and it definitely goes places that the traditional sex comedy doesn’t, but I had a lot of fun with it and it’s very much worth checking out. The central ensemble is on point.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Overnight:

Alex, Emily, and their son, RJ, have recently moved to Los Angeles’ Eastside from Seattle. Feeling lost in a new city, they are desperate to find their first new friends. After a chance meeting with Kurt at the neighborhood park, they gladly agree to join family pizza night at the home. But as it gets later and the kids go to bed, the family “playdate” becomes increasingly more revealing and bizarre as the couples begin to open up.
