25 Years Later the THE PRINCESS BRIDE Cast Reunites

     October 7, 2011

When it first arrived in theaters 24 years ago, The Princess Bride was well short of a box office smash. According to Prince Humperdinck, played by Chris Sarandon:

“They couldn’t quite figure out how to market it. They didn’t really know what they had.”

What they had was the definition of a cult classic, an inconceivably-well-put-together movie that would stand the test of time. There was a giant name Andre, a six-fingered man, princes and princesses, pirates and R.O.U.S.’s, miracle workers and albinos. What’s not to like? After more than two decades of having fans force them to repeat their famous lines, the cast of The Princess Bride reunited recently to reminisce. Hit the jump to check out what they had to say. Or don’t. As you wish.

Cary-Elwes-Westley-The-Princess-BrideThe Princess Bride cast not only reunited for EW’s annual “Reunions” issue, but also showed up on Good Morning America. For EW, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest, Carol Kane, Chris Sarandon, and Wallace Shawn all took a picture together for the first time in almost 25 years. They shared some anecdotes and trivia from their memorable time filming the Rob Reiner classic.

Cary Elwes, Westley:

“The movie has an incredible life from generation to generation. People have told me they’ve named their kids Westley and Buttercup, that they were married dressed as Westley and Buttercup. I met a girl just a few weeks ago who has “As You Wish” tattooed on her neck.”

Wallace-Shawn-Vizzini-The-Princess-BrideWallace Shawn, Vizzini:

“I was not the first person they wanted [for the part]. Unfortunately, my agent at that time believed that it would be helpful for me to know who they actually wanted, so he told me — it was Danny DeVito. Looking back on it, it didn’t help. Danny is inimitable. Each scene we did, I pictured how he would have done it and I knew I could never possibly have done it the way he could have done it. It made it challenging. I’ve mentioned it to Danny since. I said, “You know, of everything that I have ever done since birth, the thing that is most well-known is a part I had because you were unavailable.” He might have laughed nervously when I said that.”

Billy-Crystal-Miracle-Max-The-Princess-BrideBilly Crystal, Miracle Max:

“We ad libbed a lot of stuff: “Have fun storming the castle.” “Don’t go swimming for an hour — a good hour.” There was a lot of really funny stuff that never made it into the movie: “Don’t bother me, sonny. I had a bad day — I found my nephew with a sheep.” “True love is the greatest thing in the world — except for a good BM.” I remember the only trouble with the scene was Cary trying not to laugh while he was laying on the slab, because he’s supposed to be mostly dead but slightly alive.”

More quotes can be seen at the above link and in the current issue of EW in newsstands now. Check out a short video of the cast on Good Morning America below.  Be sure to leave your favorite quotes from The Princess Bride in the comments below. My personal favorite?
