THE RUNAWAYS Movie Review – Sundance 2010

With fantastic performances from Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Michael Shannon, The Runaways delivered the goods at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.  Based on the book Neon Angel: The Cherie Currie Story by Cherie Currie, The Runaways tells the coming-of-age story of the teenage rock band The Runaways and how they came together in the mid 1970′s.  Kristen Stewart stars as Joan Jett, Dakota Fanning is Cherie Currie, and Michael Shannon stars as the über-eccentric Kim Fowley – the man who put The Runaways together.

While there was a lot of debate if the film would show a no-holds-barred account of what The Runaways really went through back in the 70′s – like the drug use and the in-band make-out sessions – not only does the film show a warts-and-all look at what happened to the band – at times you’ll feel like you’re watching documentary footage from the era as Stewart and Fanning are really playing and singing in the film, and they both deliver inspired performances.  For more of my thoughts on the film, hit the jump:

The_Runaways_movie_image_Dakota_Fanning_Kristen_Stewart.jpgThe first thing to know is if you’re wishing you were at Sundance to see The Runaways, Apparition bought the film and it’ll be released in America on March 19, 2010.  So it’s only a short wait.

The movie opens in 1975 Los Angeles.  We’re quickly introduced to Joan Jett and Cherie Currie and what they were going through in their lives.

Jett was a loner trying to figure out her look and a way to play guitar when women were considered groupies and not members of a band.  At the same time, Cherie Currie was a tenth grader idolizing David Bowie and hanging out in the same local clubs as Jett.  When Joan Jett runs into Kim Fowley outside a venue, she pitches the idea of an all girls rock band and after some makeshift rehearsals and band auditions, The Runaways are born.

It’s when the group is forming that we get some awesome scenes of Michael Shannon as Kim Fowley.  Also, to help get the group ready for the road and what being a rock star is all about, Fowley makes the girls go through band camp where he teaches them the ropes and delivers some killer dialogue.  Remember, at the time, an all girls rock band had never been done and Fowley realizes he might have a huge hit on his hands.  Finally after some local parties, the band hits the road and we watch as The Runaways make the big time.

As the journey unfolds, the teenage girls begin to experiment with drugs, their sexuality, and how to survive as a band, which Cherie Currie pushes too far in almost every way.

Again, the performances are fantastic across the board, and Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning really impressed me with their portrayals of these still-living rock stars.

What I really liked about the movie is that it doesn’t take any sides about The Runaways story.  Writer/director Floria Sigismondi paints a realistic portrait of Los Angeles in 1975 and what was going on in Joan Jett’s and Cherie Currie’s lives.  We get to see how each of them lived and what brought them together.  And after they got famous and made it in the record industry, Sigismondi paints a portrait not of judgment or condemnation, but simply as it was.  The story has enough ups and downs that she didn’t need to use a heavy hand to tell the story, which some filmmakers might have done.

The other thing to know about the film is that while the movie has a great supporting cast featuring Scout Taylor-Compton (Lita Ford), Alia Skawkat (Robin who is a fictional composite of all the people that played bass in the band), and Stella Maeve (Sandy West), they’re relegated to background players with only a few scenes.  Sigismondi focuses on the Jett-Currie-Fowley relationship, and it’s a smart decision that pays off.

The Runaways movie image

Of course what would a review of The Runaways be without some mention of the rumored make out scene between Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning?

Yes, the movie has such a scene, but it’s tastefully done.  You never get the feeling that Sigismondi is using either actress more than is necessary to show the two had a night together.  But it’ll be very interesting to see what the Twilight fans think of this scene, especially Stewart’s teenage fanbase.

My larger question is what parents are going to do with their kids who want to see Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett?  Even though the film doesn’t glorify or condone any questionable action in the movie, you see Kristen Stewart (and Dakota Fanning) doing drugs, kissing girls, and walking around with not much clothing on.  The Runaways is an R-rated film that explores a different era and I think depending on the kid, some parents may have to do some actual parenting and say that while Stewart plays Bella Swan and Joan Jett, Bella Swan is nothing like Joan Jett.

Exercise common sense.

Final Thoughts

While some Sundance movies have a lot of buzz before the festival, The Runaways will ride its Sundance momentum into theaters this March and should be able to mint a lot of coin from worldwide audiences.  Also, with a killer soundtrack and an honest portrayal of The Runaways, the band should enjoy a bump in sales and a lot of new fans finding their music.

But more than anything, The Runaways is a great movie filled with honest and real performances from its experienced and talented lead actors.

Definitely recommended.

I am shocked this got a good review. Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning both suck at acting but I guess it's just a matter of opinion.
Still the trailer for this movie looked like shit, just saying I am shocked you gave it such high praise with so called “fantastic performances”.

I think you need to pull your head out of your ass.
this movie has not had one bad review 5 star by all thay have seen it

  • Allm0st

My head isn't up my ass, I don't like the actors. Twilight gets good reviews sorry I am not a fan of that either. I don't consider not liking a movie or being interested in a movie a need to pull my head out of my ass.
I don't give a shit if it has the most amazing reviews of all time, it surprises me still, why? I don't like the kids starring in it. Slumdog Millionaire has amazing reviews, I am not interested in the movie in the slightest.

Sorry I don't watch every good movie, Avatar is one of the best movies I have seen yet not everyone will enjoy it, some say it's a boring documentary about saving the planet. It also reflects a story told a hundred times over, big bad ass men with technology fighting against primitive natives with bows and arrows. Yet I still enjoy the movie, and yet I as every other human on the planet has their opinions.
My opinion is this movie looks like shit and I am surprised Frosty gave it a good review. You want me to suck it's dick for being a good movie and I say it – and you -should get in line.

    • Anonymous

if you don’t like it then why did you even watch it?
i guess only a person with no life would reply to one or two sentences with one huge paragraph.
and no one was talking about avatar or slumdog millionaire

That is the very first fucking post, just so you know I am not talking shit I am defending my opinion to those like you who cry when someone is SHOCKED when a movie they think looks bad get’s good reviews.
I am shocked Twilight is considered a romance. I am also amused how easily it is to make you rage and reveal your stupidity. :3

AllmOst, I have worked as a music photographer, casting associate, and filmmaker for many years — graduated from a top private university film school — selected out of 1800 applications for one of six spots in the production track. You ain't gonna make it in there kid. I've encountered both Joan Jett and Cherie Currie on the scene, and when I see Stewart and Fanning's performances in this film they are totally believable. The look is dead on and the music is dead on — the dialogue is from the mouths of the people who lived it and the people who lived it produced it. Though the subject may not intrest you that doesn't make a film “shit.” It makes it a well made film with actors you dislike and a true story that is well told. That's not “shit” that just plainly actors you happen to personally have no respect for and a storyline YOU personally have no desire to watch. That my friend is not the equivilent of “shit” rather it's something you have no care for and that's fine, but it's not in reality shit to people who do have intrest in the topic and story.

That is what makes a good actor. If they in the sleightest annoyed me, I'd be the first to say “these bitches suck.” In these roles they are right on the money — as close as can be to the real deal and they are perfectly cast in the film. They pulled it off.

Please suggest a more suited performer for the role of Joan Jett or Cherie Currie. I'm open to learning how you are a better filmmaker, casting director, and producer than I am. See, something you may never learn is that there is far more that goes into a film than your love of the actors. There is the story, the performances, the set design and since this is a period picture, whether or not the filmmakers nailed the era correctly or not and from what I see, they nailed it right on. Who would you have cast in this film? You wouldn't know were to start. If it were anime, you'd be all over it. YOu know something, I'm not into what you like and yet I can recognize a really well made piece of animation. I would never say a film sucks just because I don't like the lead actor's performance in a different film.

When you work in film you may not get to pick and choose who you like and who you don't like. You have to make the best of the budget, the cast, the script, the look, the music, the edit, the publicity budget (or lack there-of). You get handed a decent cast and you have to direct the actors and work the actors and shape the actors into their roles sometimes and this film was watched and nourished very carefully by all involved. When the filmmakers put it all together and get it all right, you get a film that gets solid reviews.

As for your mention of slumdogs, a film like that may never be of intrest to you but as you learn more about storytelling and film you realize, “Hey, I have zero intrest in this subject, but it's a damned good film.” I can look at Citizen Cane and say, “I don't have intrest in this at all, other than it is masterful filmmaking.” You'll learn one day, the more you are aware of history and context, the more appreciation and understanding you will have for everything. You see, you have zero knowledge of the history of this film and a zero desire to look beyond your preconceived notions of casting and totally overlook a really cool story. Though this story would probably be lost on you as you have zero knowledge of the era or the history of rock and roll so you'd be left in your limited knowledge, looking at this film and judging it on casting alone. Whereas, with the reviewers, they have a better context than you in some cases. Now, not everyone can read as many books as I have read, or live the life I've lived so I don't expect everyone to understand the bigger picture as easily as I do, but I will say, education will free you from the word “sucks” kid. Or it least it will let you know when and when not to use it. You over use it. There is nothing unique about you son. Actually in your zeal to stand out and be different, you can't see how most kids are just as mediocre as you are. You're no standout. “Sucks” isn't a word standouts use. It's a word used by the masses and soon enough you'll be as boring as your dad — if you've ever met him emo boy.

RDA, this is the most intelligently put response to a 'hater,' that I've read in some time. Seriously, it's a keeper. Thank you for sharing. I think you might be wrong about the gender of this particular hater however, as a fan of Stewart's, it's been my experience that these snarky comments usually get posted by the jealous girls/women contingent that are upset that she seems to be the gf of Rob Pattinson. It's remarkably similar to the hate Jolie gets – and as usual (predictably female) it's about 'a guy' for them in the end. Their 'mean girl' refrain is remarkably similar and they have a habit of stalking Stewart across the webisphere – from her wiki entry to the most obscure sites, they try to trash her because of what they perceive as her personal life. It's gotten worse in the last year, or since 'Edward and Bella,' have gotten together offscreen as well. They're kooks. I suppose 'allmost' could be male – as there are some catty male b*tches out there as well – but I doubt it.

  • Allm0st

What the fuck are you going on about? Thanks for five paragraphs of bullshit about how I am emo, not unique, and don't standout. I obviously pissed you off somehow to get five paragraphs from some fag who hops on every band wagon and wants to be unique and standout.
Come to think of it I think you were describing yourself in the story I haven't read that I am replying to. I am sure you expected to piss me off by throwing every title that teenagers get so angry at. I mean what teenager doesn't want to standout, be unique and be emo with a bad ass dad right?
I am no teenager sadly. And for your information, it's called freedom of speech and an opinion, people like you who masturbate while looking in the mirror every day just follow everyone else. You know what that is called? Bandwagon!
You remember back in the 70's when ALL the men had long hair, wore make up and played in a rock band? Yeah that's a bandwagon.
Kind of like how every 17 year old girl loves Twilight, and you know what I say? Back in my day Vampires sucked blood not cock. And I don't give a shit who you are, you are obviously no more unique than the 17 year old girls who get wet when Edward Cullen fucking sparkles.
Now if you excuse me I will go cut my wrist five times, and I might go rage at my 60 year old dad about how awesome he is. Cwatididthur?

How can you say you are shocked, when you haven't seen it? How are you able to say you have this vast performance archival knowledge of a 'mostly,' indie teen actress (who had/has quite the sterling acting rep).

It's not like she's some celebrity whose been around a couple decades, who typically makes sh*tty movies, who's not known for their great acting ability, so when/if they ever do give a good performance, people might be “shocked.” Please, she's not Jennifer Aniston. She's a teenager.

Outside of Twilight, I had only seen Stewart in 'Into the Wild,' and when I saw Twilight, I didn't even recall that it was the same actress from ITW. Ditto Adventureland, which was my favorite movie from 2009.

My advice: Seek help for that personal beef.

    6. Paris Hilton
    7. ….need i go on…

  • Allm0st

I don't even care for Jennifer Aniston really. Glad to know another person wants to add to the big ball of flame.

But I don't have a personal beef, I don't like Tom Cruise anymore I try to avoid his movies, not because they all suck but because he really isn't an actor anymore, he is Tom Cruise. People say the same about Nic Cage.

But seriously since when is it so bad to have an opinion? I don't like Kristen Stewart or Dakota Fanning, I thought the trailer looked cheesy and poorly done. Whether or not Joan Jett made awesome music or not, does not mean I will go watch a movie about their epic coming of age story featuring two girls who IN MY OPINION lack talent.

I saw Twilight, didn't like it, I saw War of the Worlds, Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning both had a mediocre performance IN MY OPINION. I saw Matrix as well as it's sequels, still can't say Keanu Reeves is an awesome actor or the last two films were great despite owning the trilogy.
See where I am going? You have different taste than I do as does the “RDA” person, get over it. I am shocked because it got a good review from Frosty because I thought it would TANK at the box office.
In other words he gave it a good review, so it surprised me it had potential despite my lack of interest in a movie that looks like shit.

You're very quick to judge. Are you really basing your opinions of these actors on only a few movies? I hated Twilight and didn't think much of Kristen's performance but I've liked her in other things I've seen. If you see the movie and still dislike it, so be it. But basing your opinion of a movie on a trailer and preconceived opinions of the cast? How well informed you are…

AllmOst: you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. this movie was a revelation. i've been to sundance 8 times now and have been to some of the biggest premieres in the world. this is by far the best premiere ive ever been to and this film is one of the best films i've seen about rock and roll and the lifestyle that comes along with it. astonishing performances and direction. A+++

Allmost: you are a creepy mother fu**er.

    ewwww

    can someone say mommy issues?

I'm not a huge kristen s. fan but i've seen her in a few movies i've liked. i do love dakota fanning. she's been great every since she started. i'm really looking forward to watching this movie due to so many good reviews.

  • Allm0st

You clearly have no idea what I am talking about, I don't want to see this movie. Big deal I was surprised it had a good review when I thought it would just be complete trash. How is that no idea what I am talking about? I haven't even seen the damn movie nor will I. I don't care about it, not my type of film, that is something I have an idea of what I am talking about. Movies have genres and this is a genre I don't care for.

So who has no idea what they're talking about? God damn why does everyone want to make a big issue out of me being surprised at something and not taking an interest in a movie?

  • Allm0st

Thanks for the compliments but you seriously seem confused to call someone creepy for not wanting to see a film, and yes I have mommy issues because I use ** in replace for bad words I am afraid of saying.

Either way enjoy the film, I know I will be skipping it (this makes me creepy).

  • Allm0st

Anyone else want to bitch and moan at me for not wanting to see a movie and being surprised it got a good review?

I must have missed the part where freedom of speech is illegal and creepy.

  • ColinJ

    I'm conflicted about this.

I'm a huge Runaways and Joan Jett fan. But I have been continually disgusted at Joan and her manager Kenny Laguna's treatment of everything to do with the band, especially the former members.

The fact that Joan's lawsuit against original bassist Jackie Fox made her erase Jackie from the story is just lame. Not to mention that the excellent documentary EDGEPLAY: A FILM ABOUT THE RUNAWAYS was denied the use of all Runaways music due to Joan and Laguna not liking the way she was portrayed. Constant acts like this show that Ms. Jett is an extremely petty, vindictive woman.

I'm sure this movie (at least based on the script I read) will be a Joan/Cherie-centric whitewash. The Runaways was a band full of amazing personalities, and I'm sure this movie will only focus on two of them.

And before anyone says “Well you've only got two hours to tell the full story…” Look at THE COMMITMENTS. It was a fictional band of about ten people in a movie just under two hours long, and by the end I felt like I had learned enough about every one of them to care about the whole band. Not just two or three pivotal figures.

Anyway, enough rambling. I think this will be an interesting film, and I can't wait to see if Fanning can summon the charisma that Currie had while singing 'Cheery Bomb' in THAT outfit.

  • grapenutsrbt

See how people are starting to ignore you? And now you're playing the “freedom speech, why don't you make me shut up”

Point being, you're a closed minded moron. You lump shit together and go “yeah I don't like that genre of movie so I won't see it”. That's pretty ignorant.

  • Arocha

Almost I totally get you, I mean if you don't like something that´s cool and if other people liked the move that´s cool as well, maybe you comment was a little off in judging a movie for the actors and not all the job involved from the actors to all the crew behind it, I mean if you don´t like a movie it´s fine, if you haven´t seen the movie yet and still say it will suck that´s fine, but maybe this time the actors involved did a good job, I mean I like the way dakota fanning acts and also kristen but they have done bad jobs in other movies, and that happens to every actor, if you don't like the movie and you don't want to see it, I think we all are totally cool with it, that's the way you see things and we respect it. Well personally I do. And I´m looking forward to see the movie. :)

  • Allm0st

Someone who finally understands me. Yeah I just don't want to see the movie is all, I was surprised it got a good review and that was a compliment more so than anything else. At least you understand where I am coming from as do I you.
I hope you enjoy the movie and it is as good as reviews say it is but it still won't make me see it, I personally see nothing wrong in not liking the style of a movie or the actors in it. And I have no problem with those who do.
Thanks for at least talking calmly and not trying to point out how retarded I am for not liking something.

  • luiz

“Even though the film doesn’t glorify or condone any questionable action in the movie, you see Kristen Stewart (and Dakota Fanning) doing drugs, kissing girls, and walking around with not much clothing on. “

She kisses girls and doesn't wear a chador??? Oh, my!
Seriously. Drug use can be quite dangerous, but what's wrong with kissing girls or not have “much clothing on”?

  • Allm0st

Yes I am very close minded for not liking a movie, thank you for pointing that out.

*So tell me how was Transmorphers? You know the knock off movie of Transformers, I mean you are open minded right? Did you catch Snakes on a Train as well? Who can deny the outstanding filmmaking and originality of such open minded talent from Asylum who copy other peoples work. Such a genius idea.

And yes it is freedom of speech, just as you used there. Close minded is not being surprised a movie I thought would suck ass got a good review. But hey if you want to think that feel free, I mean it's not like I am going to change your way of thinking nor do I intend to.

*By the way did you enjoy The Happening? Such a fantastic film wasn't it? Who can deny the sheer genius of M. Night Shyamalan?

My point is someone out there enjoys these movies, despite how poorly executed they are, and someone will not enjoy an amazing movie no matter how well done it is. That is not close minded, I don't like music origin stories or the coming of age stories, I don't like many musicals though I can admit I enjoy most of Tim Burton's films.

This may be one of the best movies of 2010, I don't wish to see it because I have no interest in it.

    *Sarcasm noted.

    P.S.
    Thanks for ignoring me <3

  • Allm0st

Be careful, they might decide to tell you that you're close minded for your opinion.

But yes that is pretty much why I am not interested in the film. Half a life crammed into two hours. Most if not all films like this never catch my attention much.

  • Arocha

Well a lot of bands have had the same story, I think they all try to protect the job they have done, now also remember that they were one of the first All Girls band in the world, I think Joan is trying to portray the band as a kick ass band and not like a lame girl band, I was born in the 80's and I had not idea about the runways only Joan Jett, I think in so meny points she was like the leader of the band and she is just trying to protect her work, but that happens a lot with guy bands, differences exists and it's ok, they all think differently, I will just open my mind and enjoy the movie if the movie ever comes to mexico if not then well for the people who is able to see it ENJOY and the ones who don't want to see it ENJOY a movie you like and well hope they do honor to the Runaways and all the girls envolved in the band.
Cheers from Mexico and stop arguing just respect every ones opinions ok, every opinion is important, Sorry my bad english :)

  • Arocha

No problem my friend, respect is the most important thing in the world, if you don't like something then you don't like something that totally cool, well at least we all in this page have very strong opinios that's great i think you really defend your point of view and other people did the same, we just need to stop and listen and be ok with others opnions.
    Cheers

  • Allm0st

Well you sure earned my respect by approaching my opinion in a calm and mature manner rather than telling me I am a retard for not liking something. Anyway I salute you for respecting me and my opinion as well as stating your own.
Hope the movie is as good to you as the reviews are saying. =P

  • Allm0st

You don't have bad English and it's a damn shame if you don't get to see ti since you have said you look forward to seeing it.

Yes, well I live near El Paso, Texas so hope the release the movie in El Paso maybe I can go and see it there, Thanks for the “You don't have a bad english” your so sweet I'm still learning, and also you said something about Avatar, some of my friends told me about that movie but I'm not a big fan of movies with a lot of special Effects but well I will try to go see it that's why I understand the way you see things as i don't like those kind of movies and my friends always try to change my mind but well at least I have a great time with them even when I don't like the movies they like. Hope your ok my friend and keep commenting guys, I like to hear what every body have to say about everything :)

  • Allm0st

Haha sweet? I would say just being nice. But since you keep calling me friend, any way I can talk to you other than this comment board?

    • Sand

Are you sure you can get away from this compelling conversation of yours long enough to talk to him off the board? Seriously. You’ve spent a lot of time and energy talking about a movie you aren’t interested in. It’s kinda pathetic really. Get a life, or at least enjoy it doing something you actually DO like. Sad, sad little guy you are. Please add some movies to your Netflix queue so that you have a less annoying way (for us) to wile away your seemingly boring life.

      • Kensei

I’m sorry let me pull my dick out of your mouth, now what were you saying?

  • Arocha

sure, my email address is arocha.27@hotmail.com, you guys have a great time and enjoy the movies, sundace looks like a great way to see movies a little more poetic I think :)

    • aaa

      Fags!

  • NightAvatar

Watch WAR OF THE WORLDS or MAN ON FIRE and tell me Dakota Fanning isn't incredibly talented. Kristen Stewart is incredibly talented and smart for her age. Watch Panic Room, her “seizure” scene. She was 11 when she filmed that and it's flawless. I think David Fincher and others who praise her talent know a little more than you do. Sorry man. You suck. :)

  • NightAvatar

RDA, your post started out good but became pretentious and preachy at the end. If you erase that last paragraph it might have worked, but calling a posted “son” is never a good idea. And going off about how many books you've read and how much you know… who cares? Does anybody here care about you? No. Why? Because we don't know you from Adam. You're just an anonymous internet poster. For all we know you could be a genius filmmaker but so could Allm0st, though clearly his age is holding him back a bit. Or rather his mentality since he says he's no teenager (unless he's lying of course).

My advice (which you will probably never read and if you do you'll scoff it off and ignore it) is to be more respectful of the people you bash in your posts. Calling people “son” is incredibly condescending and referring to anybody as “emo” is just plain ignorant. You sound like some grandpa preacher, and I'm almost 40!

  • Allm0st

If you are indeed almost 40 then you're about 15-16 years older than me and that's pushing 40. To give you a better idea 1985 is the year, you can do the math, 25 this year. But you do have a point in somewhat taking up for me and saying be more respectful as were you -kind of – in your response to me. In which I am about to reply to.

  • NightAvatar

My response to you was disagreement over the talent involved in this film. I ended by writing “you suck” as a joke. It might not have been obvious but I added a smiley to lighten the blow. ;-)

I have nothing against you, I just think you are wrong when you say the actors involved in this are no good. It seems you dislike them simply because they are so popular?

  • Allm0st

I suck for not liking a few actors? I can't really say Dakota Fanning was good in War of the Worlds Tom Cruise kind of ruined that movie for me though I did enjoy it as well as Man on Fire. But I don't really recall her having to do much in either if I remember correctly it was pretty much the start of her career. Those are not the movies I speak of, see movies to me can make me not want to see someone act again.
Knowing almost did it for me with Cage, Push has done it for with Fanning and Twilight with Stewart.
You make some good points though I do admit all the movies you listed I won't deny I watched and enjoyed to a certain degree. That meaning it's been forever since I saw them all I can't really remember my first impression.
I am trying to be as respectful to you as you were to me, I realize you were kind of joking with the you suck and I haven't taken it to heart nor have I taken anything on here to heart.
Point is we all have different taste in music, in movies, in TV shows in entertainment in general. Where I may really enjoy Avatar another might think it poor in story and lacking creativity. But that's their opinion, so my mentality as you questioned is fine it's just me not really wanting to see all of these two teenage girls play in a movie about teenage girls. To me Joan Jett got more credibility from her solo career “I Love Rock n Roll” is an instant classic in my opinion.
But a movie based on The Runaways? Not really interesting to me, I was only surprised it got a good review because I had been thinking this would be a stupid film. Yet here it is getting good reviews, I respected that with shock but respected it nonetheless.

I don't know your exact age but if you are almost 40 then you should know that an opinion – while it comes with a price -is just that an opinion. My taste in movies is probably not so different from your own considering you just listed three movies I have seen and would rate 4/5 stars off the top of my head.

Sorry for the long message, I didn't suck my own cock though, I simply tried to make a point which was you want to see the movie and I don't really have an interest in it. Tell me, what's wrong with two different point of views? Isn't that what makes us human? =P

  • Allm0st

Oh you didn't offend me, I wasn't sure if the you suck was joking or not, I tried to not be rude in my long wall of text.

Not because they're popular, have you sit through Push? Or even Twilight? I mean Push was a fucking cluster fuck in a nut shell or something like that. And Twilight as I said, back in my day Vampires sucked blood not cock. I mean come on man, even the romance is horrible, and Kristen Stewart doesn't even seem to try to act.
Those type of movies make me turn a cold shoulder to these. I don't mind if they are popular I just wish I could see a more recent movie where they have more than a “yeah this is some movie about something/sparkling vampires.”

But I do know that I have seen a lot of people redeem themselves maybe this is that film but I still have that music aspect in a movie that just seems to never work right. I don't know a movie off the top of my head that was about a band that was any good or well done. This seems to be the one though. =P

Edit: Damn I type too much.

  • NightAvatar

Lol, no worries. I don't like Twilight that much but I blame the director and the author of the books for that one. She did her best with what she had.

I agree with you 100% that vampires in the Twilight franchise are anything but scary. Not at all what we grew up loving about them. Twilight makes them seem more like glam models or posers but then again I couldn't care less about that franchise as it's not for my demographic. ;-)

Yes, there have been music movies that have been excellent. Watch “24-Hour Party People” or even better “Control” about the life of Ian Curtis (lead singer for Joy Division). Watch “Sid & Nancy” to see the amazing Gary Oldman's take on Sid Vicious. I also thought both “Ray” and “Walk The Line” were good films with amazing performances from both leads. There are plenty of good examples – probably more even than I can think of bad examples.

  • NightAvatar

    Thanks for your reply.

I would venture to say that whether a person has talent in acting can be more than somebody's opinion. If David Fincher says Kristin Stewart is one of the smartest and most talented actors he's worked with (for her age) then I say he knows what he's talking about. (He praises her up and down in the commentary track for Panic Room. And so does Jodie Foster, who I hope you agree is a talented actor.)

I haven't seen Push and have no interest to but almost every movie I have seen with Dakota has impressed me. She is better than I would think should be possible for a girl her age. Her little sister is good as well.

Have to agree with you about Nick Cage. I was once a fan after Raising Arizona through the 90's but I don't think I will ever watch another of his films.

    Cheers,
Rich (I was born in 1970)

  • Allm0st

I forgot about Ray and Walk the Line so touche! But yes if I buy Twilight I am buying it for a nice fire to keep me warm. And to keep it short I will check out some of the movies you recommended.
