While different folks have their own dates for when awards season has officially “begun”, I set it at the date the National Board of Review announces their picks for the year. In two of the past three years, the NBR’s pick for Best Picture has gone on to win the Oscar. However, last year’s NBR winner, Up in the Air, went home empty-handed.
This year, the NBR has given the top prize to The Social Network. The film also picked up the prizes for Best Director (David Fincher), Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Best Actor). Other winners included Lesley Manville getting Best Actress for Another Year, Christian Bale winning Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter, and Jacki Weaver receiving Best Supporting Actress for Animal Kingdom. Hit the jump for the full list of awards, including the National Board of Review’s Top 11 films, Top 10 Independent Films, Top 6 Foreign Films, and Top 6 Documentaries.

Why isn’t exit through the gift shop listed in documentary? it’s the single best documentary I’ve ever watched!
So No Natalie Portman or James Franco or Colin Firth.Weird!
Besides that I think all wins are fine but I m most Happy for Jackie Weaver bx she was Outstanding in Animal kingdom and hope her this win will lead her to Oscars and Golden Globes.
i guess no award giving bodies will give Scorsese a chance to come back in what probably is one of his best directing over the years.
also, with the great buzz on TRUE GRIT, i think, Aronofsky has lost his chance to get nominated for best director(even though they say Black Swan is a great film that is director driven). it’s sad that a director will put out a very good film like THE TOWN but will not get nominated because let’s be honest, there were better films.
the best director will likely be like this(and i still believe Nolan WILL BE NOMINATED. i mean, one of the greatest reasons will be the academy owes him a lot after the TDK snub. and the fact that the Academy’s 10 slot for best picture rule was because of the man’s film)
BEST DIRECTOR
FINCHER
HOOPER
BOYLE
NOLAN
JOEL AND ETHAN COENS
sadly, there is no chance of Lee Unkirch to be nominated. i think it’s a crime that animation directors gets snub when obviously they think TOY STORY 3 is one of the year’s best.(though i think there are 5 more better movies than TY3, i just hate animation directors getting snub for award shows)
and wouldn’t you agree this is a great year for movies. every year people are bitching about “this was a bad year for movies”. hello, there are great movies every year. and this year, there were plenty of great movies. it’s like 2007 all over again
