Netflix has released a teaser trailer for their upcoming series The Society. Written by Chris Keyser (Tyrant) and directed by Marc Webb ((500) Days of Summer), the upcoming series takes place in a world where a group of teenagers are mysterious transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, but without any trace of their parents or other adults. Left to their own devices, everything is fun and games until their little society starts breaking down and they must learn how to survive.

It’s not a bad spin on Lord of the Flies, although I think William Golding’s novel wisely seizes on the shortcomings of boys looking to become men and how masculinity is poorly conveyed through violence and domination. In a co-ed setting, I’m curious to see how the themes of the story take shape and if they can hold the tension for the whole season. Obviously, there’s a mystery aspect to the show, but the heart of the matter is whether young people can form their own society. This teaser seems a little more cynical than I am about teenagers, but I’m curious to see where Keyser and Webb take this one.

Check out The Society teaser trailer below. The show hits Netflix on May 10th and stars Rachel Keller, Kathryn Newton, Alex Fitzalan, Kristine Froseth, Jacques Colimon, Sean Berdy, Toby Wallace, Gideon Adlon, Olivia DeJonge, Alex MacNicoll, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jose Julian, Salena Qureshi, Jack Mulhern, and Grace Victoria Cox.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Society:

The Society follows a group of teenagers who are mysteriously transported to a facsimile of their wealthy New England town, left without any trace of their parents. As they struggle to figure out what has happened to them and how to get home, they must establish order and form alliances if they want to survive. The series is a modern take on Lord of the Flies.
