There were rumors that The Strain got the go-ahead for a second season, but now FX has made it official, running with the appropriate press release title, “The Strain to Spread Though the Summer Of 2015.”  For anyone who hasn’t given the show a shot just yet, I highly recommend it.  We’ve seen six episodes of season 1 thus far and while I can’t say every moment rocks high quality writing, performances and believable behavior, there’s no denying that it’s still a blast to watch.

No spoilers here, but the show kicks off with a plane landing at JFK.  It touches down safe and sound, but when there isn’t a single peep from the pilot, crew or any of the passengers after, the CDC is called in to investigate what is dubbed a “dead airplane.”  But the thing is, the passengers aren’t dead.  They start waking up and that’s when crazy things start going down.  Hit the jump for more on The Strain season 2 renewal.

the-strain-mondo-posterNot only is The Strain the top new series on cable in 2014 for adults 18 – 49, but the show’s first episode, “Night Zero,” also became FX’s most watched series premiere in history with 12.7 million viewers.  Thanks to those accomplishments, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and Carlton Cuse are getting another go-around with FX placing an order for a 13-epsiode season two set to begin airing in summer 2015.  FX Networks and FX Productions CEO John Landgraf stated:

“We’ve never had any doubts about The Strain.  Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more.  It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace.  We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale.”

Staying true to form, del Toro expressed his excitement by adding:

“I am thrilled!  Another season to spread the virus!  Working with Carlton, Chuck and FX has been immensely rewarding and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes – the blood hits the fan on this one, mankind becomes an endangered species.”

If you’ve been keeping up with The Strain, you’re well aware that things are about to get crazy after all the death and destruction episode 6 just teased.  Click here to check out all of Allison’s The Strain recaps and catch the new episodes when they air on FX on Sunday nights at 10pm.  Then, on December 2nd, you’ll also be able to own The Strain season 1 on DVD and Blu-ray as well.
