Universal has released a new poster from its upcoming thriller The Thing. Acting as a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same name, The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Joel Edgerton (Warrior), and Eric Christian Olsen (Fired Up!). The pic is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and centers on a group of scientists who discover an alien spacecraft (and its ill-intentioned pilot) buried beneath the ice of Antarctica.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Thing:

Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty.  It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists.  The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being.  It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman.  In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they’re infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime.  Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago.  But it is about to wake up.

When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew’s pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time.  And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter’s classic 1982 film of the same name.  Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, the thriller is produced by Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (Dawn of the Dead).

So dumb that they’re not giving it an original title. I have high hopes for it cause I feel like the story could definitely be expanded on. First one left a lot of unanswered questions, and modern special effects could really create some disturbing scenes under a skillful director.

I’m pretty sure you’re alone in your thinking that modern special effects would help this movie out

the john carpenter film had very impressive special effects ! and they were all done ,”old school !” have high hopes for this one , hope they dont let me down ! the carpenter film to this day is considered by most horror ,scifi fans to be one of the best films in the genre !

$50 says the reason they’ve kept THE THING title is because all this talk about it being a prequel to John Carpenter’s original is marketing BULLSHIT.

If this movie makes a profit I can promise in 2013 we’ll get an official Remake- THE THING 2- where Mary Elizatbeth Winstead’s character or another survivor will run to a nearby United States research center & bring forth a whole new/same reimagining of terrible events on them.

Michael Cera to play R.J. MacReady.

Yeah man, this film is totally a reboot in disguise, bloody joke really.

I honestly thought this was a re-make, I had no idea it was supposed to be a prequel, so giving it the same name is pretty dumb.

That said, this is a really good poster, it’s very strong without being overwhelming.

It actually sounds like a remake of the 50s Howard Hawks Thing, which then segues into the Carpenter 80s Thing. Tomato, to-mah-to, it’s still a remake.

i’m happy they went prequel rather than remake (however similar the stories will be). i actually think it’s quite clever. part of what made “The Thing” work though was the mystery/discovery about what had happened at the previous outpost and the fact that history was about to repeat itself.
