Warner Bros. has unveiled the first trailer for The Town, Ben Affleck’s directorial follow-up to Gone Baby Gone. Equal parts heist thriller and romantic drama, this adaptation of the Chuck Hogan novel The Prince of Thieves stars Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jeremy Renner, Jon Hamm, and Blake Lively. Check out the clip after the jump.
Oddly, subsequent to a poignant shot of Affleck through a prison window, the trailer touts “the acclaimed director of Gone Baby Gone.” Is there still residual Affleck resentment circa his 2003-04 career dive that his solid directing work on Gone doesn’t earn him top billing?
Not to say that the film doesn’t look like it was made by the acclaimed director of Gone Baby Gone. Affleck seems to be exploring similar themes (is Boston a theme?) and developing a distinct visual style. I am eager to see how the above black-and-white screencap of a gun-toting Renner fits into the context of the film.
Here’s the official synopsis:
Doug MacRay (Ben Affleck) is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean. With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang’s latest job, when they briefly took a hostage–bank manager, Claire Keesey (Rebecca Hall). Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name… and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug…not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her. The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.

Looks good. Too bad they gave away that twist.
I for one think GONE BABY GONE is underrated. Affleck has a good career as a director ahead of him. Theres some style growing here.
The name sucks though. THE TOWN????????????????????
I don't mind the title so much — a bit boring — but I agree with you on every other count.
worst trailer i have ever seen.
i already know the ending… so why should i see this?!
morons…
I agree that the trailer showed too much, but it still looks awesome anyway.
I'm in.
Its not about the ending, its about the journey. Damn, don't you know anything Nate?
Woot. I especially liked the Heat-style of gun play that was going on. The sound and fire from them was done nicely.
Grats, Affleck. I'll stop in and see this one.
Trailer looks good, altho I gotta admit giving away too many plot devices kinda kills the mystery of the story for me.
Let's face it All trailers looks awesome. This is just another trailer, we don't know abou the film, or reviews.
But I will watch this movie. xD
yeah but the journey doesn't look like much… so why bother?
if you couldn't tell the ending just from the synopsis then you must not watch many movies. You also don't really know the ending because trailers can some times be deceptive.
The twist is probably established early on in the film. Looks good to me.
They didn't give away the ending .There's a twist to the ending .He changed the ending from the book. Not even people who saw the screenings know the ending because he did a couple of re-shoots.The Killer Inside had a long trailer that looked like they showed everything but there was a surprise at the end.Not every is what it seems sometimes. You have to see the movie yourself.
I saw this trailer this weekend and about 40 seconds into it when we first see Affleck in the trailer , the girl I was with ( Who isnt even a real movie fan) turned to me and said the Affleck was one of the bank robbers and he falls for this girl.
So everyone who is bagging on it for giving away to much in the trailer lets realize this isnt the Sixth Sense and isnt trying to hide a twist. This event must happen to provide the film with the story and emotion that revolves around the so called “twist”. I mean it is based on a book so anyone could figure it out …
