Even if you’re still flipping over tables in light of the cliffhanger-heavy season finale of The Walking Dead, you might be interested to see the first look at Negan’s backstory. Not even comic book fans really know the details of how the character became the most infamous villain in this world. But Image+, a monthly previews catalog from the comic book publisher, will tell the tale, and the first look has arrived.
The 48-page story is titled Here’s Negan, seemingly a play on Jack Torrence’s moment in The Shining, and it will be released 4 pages per month. The first page debuted on The Hollywood Reporter and features four panels spotlighting the making of Negan’s signature weapon, Lucille. The character’s empty eyes stare at a blazing bonfire while he wraps barbed wire over a baseball bat.
Jeffrey Dean Morgan used Lucille in quite the bloody fashion on the Walking Dead’s recent finale, though fans won’t know the full extent of it until next season. Many fans and critics denounced the action, though the producers had their reasons. The actor spoke to THR during a conference call earlier in the week about his hope for Here’s Negan to blend into the show.
I talked to Robert Kirkman after we did Talking Dead, and he is doing the backstory of Negan right now. But whether or not — or when — we see that, and I hope we do, I can’t answer that. But hopefully we’ll find out more as we go. I approach [Negan]…like he used to be a used-car salesman. That’s what I know, and there’s not a lot beyond that…He’s a car salesman who has survived as long as Rick and his gang, so what has he done to get there?
The first installment of Image+ with Here’s Negan will hit stands on April 27.
