This week on Blu-ray, a couple of this summer’s theatrical releases are already hitting home video, and the most recent seasons of a few well-loved television series get the Blu-ray treatment in anticipation of the upcoming fall TV premieres.  Briefly:

Hit the jump for more details.

Battleship (Two-Disc Combo Pack: Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

Director Peter Berg’s (Hancock) loose adaptation of the popular board game took a lot of flack from critics and wasn’t exactly a box office smash, but I actually think Battleship is a lot of fun.  The movie never takes itself too seriously, Taylor Kitsch’s charisma is killer, and at the film actually involves a touching nod to the hard work done by those in our armed forces.  The special features include a picture-in-picture video commentary throughout the film by Berg, an 8-minute previsualization of the alternate ending, a VIP tour of the USS Missouri, and a featurette that delves into how the film incorporated aspects of the Hasbro board game.

Darling Companion [Blu-ray]

Director Lawrence Kasdan reteamed with his The Big Chill star Kevin Kline for this ensemble dramedy that centers on a group of peoples’ search for a missing dog.  As they all split up to find the pooch, the characters come face-to-face with problems in their own lives.  The disc includes commentary by Lawrence Kasdan, Meg Kasdan, and Kevin Kline, as well as a few behind-the-scenes featurettes.

The Lucky One (Movie only+UltraViolet) [Blu-ray]

The latest Nicholas Sparks adaptation is now available on Blu-ray.  Zac Efron stars as a U.S. Marine who returns home and sets out to find the identity of a woman whose photograph, found overseas, kept him alive.  The special features detail Efron’s research and preparation for becoming a marine (ie. how he got jacked), Efron’s chemistry with co-star Taylor Schilling, and explore “The Romantic World of The Lucky One.”

The Pirates! Band of Misfits (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD)

From Aardman Animations, the studio behind Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run, comes this goofy, silly, stop-motion animated adventure The Pirates! Band of Misfits.  The supplements include a commentary from director Peter Lord, co-director Jeff Newitt, and editor Justin Krish, short films, a featurette that takes a look at the stop-motion process and the filmmakers’ blending of CG with the puppets, and more.

Starship Troopers: Invasion [Blu-ray]

This straight-to-dvd fourth installment in the Starship Troopers franchise switches formats to animation, as those pesky bugs are back yet again to wreak havoc.  Storywise, Invasion is actually a direct sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s gloriously tongue in cheek 1997 original.  The disc includes filmmaker commentary, making-of featurettes, and a gag reel.

Think Like a Man (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

One of 2012’s bigger surprise hits was the adaptation of the Steve Harvey book Think Like a Man.  A sequel to the ensemble comedy about relationships is already in development, but you can now relive the fun at home with the Blu-ray release of the original.  Details on the disc supplements are scarce, but the Blu-ray will definitely include five behind-the-scenes featurettes and a gag reel.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Second Season (Blu-ray/DVD Combo + Digital Copy)

As we near the September return dates of everyone’s favorite TV shows, the previous seasons are starting to hit home video.  The second season of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is one such show, and the seven-disc set is packed with special features.  Included are audio commentaries for six episodes, character dossiers, a 14-minute recap of the first season, a picture-in-picture track with cast and crew commentary for “Under God’s Power She Flourishes,” an interactive feature about living in 1921, a 25-minute documentary covering the 1920s and the financial crisis, an introduction to new characters, and a short featurette covering the second season’s new sets and locations.  For Boardwalk Empire fans, this set is pretty packed with goodies.

Homeland: The Complete First Season

One of—if not the—best new series to come out of the previous television season is undoubtedly Showtime’s psychological thriller Homeland.  The show features a powerhouse performance from Claire Danes as a brilliant but volatile CIA agent who is tracking an immense terrorism threat to our nation’s safety and well-being.  The 3-disc box set includes audio commentaries on selected episodes, a making-of featurette, a prologue for season two, and deleted scenes.

Sons of Anarchy: Season Four [Blu-ray]

The fourth season of FX’s popular biker drama Sons of Anarchy is hitting home video.  The box set has plenty of special features to please longtime fans of the series, as extended versions of four episodes are included as well as audio commentaries on four episodes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes and a gag reel.  Get your Charlie Hunnam on.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Second Season (Limited Edition) [Blu-ray]

AMC is releasing not one, but two different box sets for the second season of the zombie drama The Walking Dead.  For those that just want the episodes and special features, the normal set will do, but for Walking Dead superfans the Limited Edition is the way to go.  For a little more money, you’ll get your discs in a limited edition zombie head packaging that features a zombie head gloriously stabbed in the eye with a screwdriver.

Both sets are packed to the max with supplemental materials with audio commentaries on five episodes (sorry, no Frank Darabont), 11 featurettes covering everything from music to makeup effects to how different/similar the series is to its graphic novel counterpart.  The sets also come with webisodes from the entire second season and deleted scenes.  A swell primer for those gearing up for the show’s upcoming third season.
