Not everyone was a fan of The Walking Dead’s latest season finale. It ended with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Negan swinging his barbed wire bat at one of the members of the group, though it was left a mystery as to which of the characters ended up eating gravel. These new Comic-Con posters for the AMC series, released ahead of the San Diego convention this week, further play up the speculation by showing each member of the main cast facing certain death.
Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), Daryl (Norman Reedus), Glenn (Steven Yeun), Maggie (Lauren Cohen), Carl (Chandler Riggs), Sasha (Sonequa Martin), Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), Rosita (Christian Serratos), Aaron (Ross Marquand), and Eugene (Josh McDermitt) were among those left staring down Lucille, Negan's deadly bat. Each return in their own one-sheet for the Con in the same circumstances, which won't be resolved until the Season 7 premiere this fall.
At the time of the cliffhanger, director Greg Nicotero defended the choice by saying:
Next season is really Negan’s story and how our group has to deal with who he is and what his way of life is, so I think it’s the perfect ending to this season: watching everyone on their knees, stripped down to the barest vulnerability, and knowing that the cavalry’s not coming over the hill. Our group has never been in this situation before, so I think it’s the perfect opportunity. We had early conversations about, would we show who it was at the end of the season? Yeah, you always have discussions of what’s the best story. I was very passionate about ending this season on a cliffhanger and not knowing, because I feel like it propels us into next season in a great way. So people can be upset. A week from now, they won’t be upset anymore, and it’ll be fun.
The cast and crew of The Walking Dead will continue its yearly tradition of hitting up San Diego Comic-Con, where they will no doubt further prolong the anguish. See the posters below (via AMC's Facebook page):
