THE WALKING DEAD Season Two May Not Hit Until October 2011

Though The Walking Dead has already been renewed for a second season, fans may be disappointed to hear THR’s report that we likely won’t see that season hit the air until next October. For those unaware, this first season of AMC’s new series will only have six episodes. That’s right, we’re already halfway through the first season of one of the best new series on TV. Apparently the plan is to hold onto the second season because the cable network’s Fearfest, their annual Halloween inspired horror film marathon through the month of October, served as a great lead-in to the horror TV series. In addition, AMC will already have new seasons of Breaking Bad and Mad Men to air over the summer and at some point has to figure out when they will premiere The Killing.  More after the jump.

It’s important to note that the plan to start The Walking Dead’s second season next October isn’t final, but is simply the current train of thought around the network offices. The second season hasn’t even started production yet (though we heard it was supposed to begin in February of 2011), so it’s still quite early. Also, I’m sure AMC doesn’t want to risk losing their big audience which actually had an increase in viewers with last night’s third episode. The good news is Frank Darabont is expected to write and direct an episode for the second season, so I guess that will have to do for now. Anyone a little sad about the potentially long wait?

Well…”The Walking Dead” is also available as a comic book, and they are at nr 80 now :) . almost as good but only almost…

This is gonna be a long year :(

What they need to do is air the second season early next year and film a 2-hour movie for next October’s Fearfest … which can be used to kick-off the third season!

I don’t see why people are “sad” I mean, this should have been expected to have been coming. I was anticipating that the second season would release sometime in mid-october seeing as it will be a full season, which could help to drive more viewers to the fearnet shows outside of the walking dead mid-october.

Sure it would be awesome if every Sunday from now until the shows cancellation or culmination there was an episode airing, but that isn’t how things work. Generally you get a season once a year, especially on such a high-quality production like this. The season will be released in its yearly time frame and I’m sure we’ll still see a third season.

While all that may be true … it doesn’t mean we have to like it. With so much [low quality television] on these days, it’s perfectly natural for us to want to hold on to something great & want more of it.

Maybe, if we get lucky, they’ll release some Webisodes, similar to what Battlestar Galactica did, to fill in the gaps – character back stories – the fall of Atlanta – etc.

      • Excpired @

That would be good, but AMC so far hasn’t done that at all (as far as I know). Whereas sci-fi and other channels are well known for webisodes. If they do them I’d also hope they would be high-quality and not crappy like the Heroes webisodes.

I understand, I feel this way about most of the shows when they go away that I watch, but it is expected so I still don’t really see the point of the surprise factor.

It is a bit sad but I just thought they’d wait this long anyway. Every show to premiere on any premium channel has had to wait almost a year, I see no difference with The Walking Dead.

Can I get a resounding “duh”? 13 episodes, a recent green light…it takes time to make these, people.

  6. Kenny38606 @

Yeah, this article really isn’t needed.Generally, shows debut around the same time each year.Even though this is a short season, there’s no reason why it would air any earlier.

  7. Kenny38606 @

Hell, the last series of Torchwood was in July 2009 and the next starts summer 2011, so that’s nothing.

I’m wondering how AMC’s 2011 schedule will look like. So far
    Breaking Bad July
    Walking Dead Oct

    Mad Men Summer
    The Killing Spring
    Hell on Wheels Fall?

AMC sooner or later needs a second night since Mad Men and Breaking Bad can’t air at 9pm.

Has your sweet tooth for “The Walking Dead” been satisfied? If not, an inside look at Episode 3 is now available. In this five minute clip, Frank Darabont talks about the developing love triangle between Lori , Rick and Shane.

It’s a perfect october thing though. If this just goes on for years and years every fall… that’s awesome.

  11. Bogie @

    That’s exactly what I expected

Sad and then upset that the Blu-ray release probably wont hit until August… I need my zombie fix maaan!

I am disappointed to find out there were only six shows for season one. My husband and I are addicted! But if I have to wait until October, it won’t stop me from seeing it, just wish it wasn’t almost a year away…

  15. Ze French Tickler @

They should start filming ASAP and expand the first season to 12 or 14 episodes. Then they can have their fall season 2.

  16. ned @

OHH NOOO! THAT SUCKS. BIG TIME.

I hope AMC makes the necessary adjustments for this.

A very long wait might cause them a big loss in its audience!

WALKING DEAD! SOON! PLEASE! :) ))

  17. Evan @

i think they should air maybe half of the second season during the summer break and then air the second half in october

  18. Bencosmo @

Unfortunately they seem to be following the same pattern as HBO with True Blood or Showtime with Dexter by waiting 9 to 10 months between season. Not very considerate for the fans.

  19. Becky @

I can’t wait until October! This sucks, I got so into this series and now I have to wait forever just to see what happens next…i don’t think that’s fair to the fans. :(

  20. Juan QUiceno @

man that is the worst news I have heard in a really long time. they finally make a real series totally worth watching, and now they are busting our balls with a 6 episode season and 1 fking year to air the second season?!! this is bsht!!!
I guess they prefer to air bullshit series like 30rock and other similar shit. TV stations you viewers have grown we want quality series, we are tired of the same recicled shit.

  21. Samantha @

    Omg, thats gay!
I wont be one of the people to stop watching it.
    I love this show! :)

  22. djeff @

What the hell people. You have to understand it takes time to make shows. especially shows of high quality. You say it’s not fair to the fans, well other then paying for your cable bill every month you are getting this form of entertainment next to free! sure they can release this come july. It would be half-%#@ed, and then you’d complain how the shows gone down hill. Waiting till the fall does suck but i’d rather wait and get top notch programming! so shut ya mouths!

  23. dizz @

yea it takes time to make them, but they could air them one by one instead of all at once sequentially wtf

    • UDIZZYBLAD @

r u retarded or somethin then it just wouldnt flow !!!!!
Personally i would rather wait 12 months between each series than 1 month between each episode ……. :)

  24. janovablush @

I myself cannot wait, but I’d rather it take the time that’s necessary to produce top quality programming that we’ve seen so far with this show. I just wish they would run the first season again, so I could watch it all over again. They had it for a while on Demand, but now it’s gone. Oh well, my husband and I are just dying to see Season 2.
