Keanu Reeves is having a nice little renaissance as of recent. Most of this was powered by his titular role in John Wick, a sleeper hit and arguably one of the best action films of this decade thus far, and most people are simply waiting for him to return in that same role for John Wick: Chapter 2, which will see release next year. And yet, between those projects he’s booked gigs with Nicolas Winding Refn (The Neon Demon), Anna Lily Amirpour (The Bad Batch), and apparently started work on the long-rumored third Bill & Ted adventure, amongst other movies.

One of those other movies is The Whole Truth, the latest drama from Frozen River helmer Courtney Hunt. The film stars Reeves as a lawyer who is brought in to defend a teenager (Gabriel Basso) who is accused of stabbing his father (Jim Belushi) to death. The narrative looks pretty familiar, with little twists and plot turns clearly littered throughout the first trailer for the movie, which you can take a look at below. In the oncoming tide of self-important Oscar bait, however, The Whole Truth could end up being that small, enjoyable genre work that delivers the goods with a handful of good actors, including Renee Zellweger and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, tight direction, and a solid script. We’ll see for sure when the film hits theaters on October 21st.

Here’s the trailer for The Whole Truth:

Here’s the official synopsis for The Whole Truth:

Defense attorney Richard Ramsay (Keanu Reeves) takes on a personal case when he swears to his widowed friend, Loretta Lassiter (Renée Zellweger), that he will keep her son Mike (Gabriel Basso) out of prison. Charged with murdering his father, Mike initially confesses to the crime. But as the trial proceeds, chilling evidence about the kind of man that Boone Lassiter (Jim Belushi) really was comes to light. While Ramsay uses the evidence to get his client acquitted, his new colleague Janelle (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) tries to dig deeper – and begins to realize that the whole truth is something she alone can uncover.
