X-Men: Days of Future Past doesn’t hit theaters for a couple more months, but the X-Men movie franchise is humming right along as director Bryan Singer already has his eye on the sequel, X-Men: Apocalypse (a couple days ago, we reported that the film will take place in the 1980s).  But what about the world’s most popular mutant, Wolverine?  Last year, we reported that The Wolverine director James Mangold and star Hugh Jackman were planning to make another spin-off featuring the character.  Jackman noted that “there are some really cool ideas“, but didn’t want to move forward until they had something great.

It looks like they still have plenty of time to figure out what that is, but there is at least an idea of when The Wolverine 2 might happen.  Hit the jump for more.  X-Men: Days of Future Past opens in 3D on May 23rd.

Responding to fan @R__E__D_R__U__M on Twitter about when we might see The Wolverine 2, Mangold responded:

Scheduling-wise, that sounds about right.  A couple weeks ago, Mangold entered talks to direct the adaptation of the mystery novel The Deep Blue Goodbye.  He’s also attached to adapt Three Little Worlds starring Reese Witherspoon.  Either way, he has something to keep him busy while Singer works on X-Men: Apocalypse, which is due out May 27, 2016.

This means that the earliest we’ll see a new, solo Wolverine movie is 2017 or 2018.  The larger question is if Hugh Jackman will still be playing the character.  If he does return, he will have played Wolverine for almost two decades.  Jackman will also be around 50-years-old if the movie comes out in 2018, although that probably won’t be a concern since Hugh Jackman doesn’t age like normal people.  The question is if he still wants to play the role, and if not, perhaps a new spinoff is the best time to introduce a new actor, although it’s difficult to imagine anyone else playing Wolverine.
