A new image from The Wolverine has gone online, and it shows off Wolverine’s bone claws.  For those unfamiliar with the character (or had the good sense to avoid X-Men Origins: Wolverine), Wolverine’s claws are part of his genetic mutation, but they’re made of bone.  They were coated in indestructible adamantium (along with his entire skeleton) as part of the Weapon X program, which took place before he joined the X-Men.  While The Wolverine will reportedly have nothing to do with the plot of Origins, it will still acknowledge the X-Men trilogy, and surprisingly, won’t be a prequel to them.

Hit the jump for more and to check out the image.  The film stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila FukushimaThe Wolverine opens July 26, 2013. [Update: We've updated the article with a higher-quality image, which you can check out after the jump.]

Speaking to Empire, director James Mangold revealed that The Wolverine is a sequel to all of the X-Men movies:

“Where this film sits in the universe of the films is after them all,” reveals Mangold. “Jean Grey is gone, most of the X-Men are disbanded or gone, so there’s a tremendous sense of isolation for him.”

It’s a surprising revelation since A) We had seen set photos that took place in a Japanese POW camp, and B) the comic the film is based on Chris Claremont and Frank Miller‘s Wolverine, which takes place before the eponymous mutant joined the X-Men.  However, Mangold believes it’s important that the new movie exists beyond the current movie continuity:

“That’s something that for me was very important, that I land in a very specific place in his timeline,” says Mangold. “I wanted to be able to tell the story without the burden of handing it off to a film that already exists and having to conform to it. The ideas of immortality reign very heavily in this story and the burden of immortality weighs heavily on Logan. For me that’s such an interesting part of Logan’s character that is nearly impossible to explore if you have a kind of league or team movie.”

I’m fascinated by what Mangold has in store for the character.  As for the bone claws, presumably this is one of the World War II scenes unless Logan is going to have his adamantium ripped out like he did in X-Men #25, and that seems unlikely.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Wolverine:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

    bone claws are so stupid

    • shimmy shames

I agree sir, but this takes place in a world where people wear their underwear on the outside. Anything goes.

yeah but the other stuff is badass especially the adamantium class are cool as shit the bone claws are just dumb

  • TheHOYT

Why can’t they make them look like extra long bear claws … the bone claw designs, in both Wolverine films, look dumb.

Claremont and Miller’s Wolverine takes place before he joined the X-Men? I think you might want to check that.

Chris Claremont and Frank Miller’s Wolverine, which takes place before the eponymous mutant joined the X-Men.

matt lol yeah it was so much before he joined x men that the x men were at his wedding in the comic lol

My poor wolverine will never get The justice he deserves…. They should have just made a weapon x movie and showed what kind of pain he really went through so we could at least feel for him…

But instead we get him fighting a fake deadpool, flying around in a helicopter with gambit, headbutting the blob, horrible acting scenes with Will I am, sabertooth pancaking cyclops.. And a 2 minute adamantium bonding process that left him with the worst cgi claws ever… The only part of that movie that resembles wolverines back story is when he Escapes butt naked…

I hate complaining but I think this was a Fox move not mangolds idea; guess that why Darren left the pic ( not because he would be away from family). I won’t say the movie will suck because it could end up being really good. When you grow up loving a character u just wish they would make a character centric flick and go from there; the concept art has looked pretty cool sO far so here’s hoping for good things….. Maybe even the real lady death strike searching for wolverine in a post credits scene

That is unfortunate. I’ve got no problem with the bone claws other than the way they look here but I was really hoping that Fox would start undoing the mess of a storyline they have created with the X-Men films so far.

“I want to feel the veins?” What does that mean? Someone’s been shooting up too much heroin.

Why the hell is everyone complaining about the Bone Claws?

I’m beyond excited for this movie now. The fact that it takes place after the trilogy is extremely interesting. My only hope is that they don’t retcon what happened in origins. As bad as it was, it’s still canon. The X-Men movies don’t need anymore continuity issues. Hopefully Days of FuturePast will fix those issues like they said. I’m hoping that since Millar is overseeing these projects that he will make sure to keep all the continuity in check.

Why the hell is everyone complaining about the bone caws?

My excitement for this movie has just shot through the roof. The fact that it takes place after the X-Men trilogy makes this one SOOOO much more interesting.

As far as continuity goes, I hope they don’t ignore X-Men Origins. As bad as it was, its still canon. The X-Men’s movie continuity is bad enough as it is. They don’t need to make it worse by ignoring what came before.

Hopefully Days of Future Past will try and fix all those continuity errors like they said it would. And hopefully now they they have Millar overseeing all of these projects he can keep everyone in check and make sure all these movies stay connected and build to a more cohesive X-Men Movieverse.

Wolverine discovers he has bone claws after he survives Magneto ripping his adamantium out. Maybe we’ll get to see this in the next X-Men movie

    • Alex-mansy

      Hopefully.

It’s seriously surprising that this movie is gonna take place after the trilogy..i haven’t read any of the wolverine comic books so i’m pretty much in the dark here….James Mangold is a credible director, too. (I love 3:10 to Yuma)….for some reason this so far is looking more interesting than Iron Man 3 (the firstt trailer let me down…)

This should have no connection with all the previous X-men movies except First Class.

They should have just done Weapon X from the beginning instead they have crap that they slap together from people who couldn’t care less about the characters and just want to make money off of the fans.
