Official Synopsis for THE WOLVERINE; Director James Mangold Tweets Reports from the Set

     August 16, 2012

The reason I have hope for The Wolverine is because it has distanced itself from X-Men Origins: Wolverine as much as possible.  It takes place in Japan so American audiences aren’t used to seeing a superhero movie in that setting.  More importantly, the story will have no connection to Origins, and Hugh Jackman said it won’t be overloaded with mutants.  Today, Fox has released a brief and official plot synopsis.  It doesn’t reveal any major details, although I’m curious how Wolverine will be “forever changed” by the events in this film.  He’s already lost his memory, so what will connect this movie to X-Men?

Hit the jump to check out the synopsis along with some tweets from director James Mangold about what’s happening on set.  The film also stars Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila FukushimaThe Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.

x-men_origins_wolverine_movie_image_hugh_jackman_01Here’s the synopsis [via JoBlo]:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

In case you’re wondering, the synopsis is referring to this comic book arc by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller.

And here’s what Mangold’s been tweeting about the film:

movies I think about as I make #TheWolverine : Eastwood’s Josie Wales, Powell’s Back Narcissus, Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Marnie, Vertigo

Today I am starting an intense set piece of action and drama at the Yashida Compound set. Logan, Yukio and Shingen.

Just finished pages. Made some tweaks. Scribbled out fresh shot list. About to head to set for day 14 of THE WOLVERINE.

And don’t forget : Debbie does Godzilla and Yo Mama got sh** stains in her panties.
I have no hope for this movie.

With such intelligent retorts like that, i wouldn’t expect you to.

But thanks for offering absolutely nothing to the conversation.

how will adamantium even be a thing? In feudal japan? I know, no connections to that shitty last movie, but he gets his claws towards the modern era, doesn’t he?

The story takes place in modern Japan, or at least 1980′s Japan, when Logan falls in love with the daughter of a Yakuza / Ninja Clan leader (as I recall). He already had the coated skeleton at this point. I’m hoping the film captures the spirit of the Wolverine comics, which often involved globe-trotting adventures through the seedy underworld, more than typical superhero stuff. The books also had a sense of humor, which I hope that is not lost in a quest to be as gritty as The Dark Knight. They picked a good chapter to dig into at least.

Who said anything about feudal japan?? This [most likely] still takes place in the 80′s and is a sequel to origins, meaning its still not a reboot. Only different tone entirely.

I thought he had the bone claws (from birth) til Stryker gets hold of him for Weapon-X?
Also, I seem to recall Jackman raving about how great Origins was just before it was leaked online and panned….
Think this franchise needs to be left alone for a couple of years imo and then rebooted with a different (unknown?) actor.

  • Akurei

I think Hugh Jackman looks the part for Wolverine near perfect.. the only problem Ive had is that in the films Wolverine has always been to emotional and deep and Not mean enough like his comic counter part..
in the comics and even the cartoon show.. he’s always been more of a mean, cold, angry badass.. itleast for the most part..
I wish Hugh Jackman act more of the comic Wolverine.. and stop being so damn emotional..
Im crossing my fingers for this next Wolverine movie and hoping they pull it off right.. xO

I agree with Akurei that Wolverine has been much less hardcore and aggressive than he comes off in the comics, but as much as I don’t like Hugh Jackman, I can’t blame him for the namby-pamby personality of Wolverine in the movies. I’m sure the blame for that falls on the shoulders of the screenwriters, and the directors who decide the writing is just fine.

Wolverine should be one of the absolute most rough, angry, rampaging anti-heroes on the screen, but so far he’s been playing pattycake compared to how he seems in the comics. I want to see the rabid, ravenous Wolverine I fell in love with as an angry youth. I hope this new film comes closer to that.
