After a rather long development that saw Darren Aronofsky sign on and then subsequently drop out of the director’s chair, The Wolverine is now finally heading into production. Under the direction of James Mangold, Hugh Jackman returns as the titular mutant, and the story finds Logan as a stranger in a strange land (ie. Japan). The ensemble cast includes Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila Fukushima, with Svetlana Khodchenkova recently entering into negotiations to play Viper. Stage work is being filmed in Australia while on location shooting will take place in Japan, and now a batch of images of some under-construction sets and quite revealing concept art has landed online.
Hit the jump to check out the images of the sets and concept art, but beware of possible major spoilers.
The set images aren’t super revealing, as we basically see some half-built structures and a miniature model of a prison of some sort. The concept art, however, outlines some major plot points from the story including what looks to be a massive explosion.
We don’t know much about the film plotwise, but Fox CEO Tom Rothman described the hardened pic as “true, berserker, bad ass Wolverine.” There were even conversations between Jackman and Mangold about shooting both PG-13 and R-rated versions of the film, though we have yet to hear an update on that decision. These concept art images certainly promise an ambitious vision, and hopefully Mangold can deliver the Wolverine movie fans have been longing for.
