After a rather long development that saw Darren Aronofsky sign on and then subsequently drop out of the director’s chair, The Wolverine is now finally heading into production.  Under the direction of James Mangold, Hugh Jackman returns as the titular mutant, and the story finds Logan as a stranger in a strange land (ie. Japan).  The ensemble cast includes Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, and Rila Fukushima, with Svetlana Khodchenkova recently entering into negotiations to play Viper.  Stage work is being filmed in Australia while on location shooting will take place in Japan, and now a batch of images of some under-construction sets and quite revealing concept art has landed online.

Hit the jump to check out the images of the sets and concept art, but beware of possible major spoilers.

The set images aren’t super revealing, as we basically see some half-built structures and a miniature model of a prison of some sort.  The concept art, however, outlines some major plot points from the story including what looks to be a massive explosion.

We don’t know much about the film plotwise, but Fox CEO Tom Rothman described the hardened pic as “true, berserker, bad ass Wolverine.”  There were even conversations between Jackman and Mangold about shooting both PG-13 and R-rated versions of the film, though we have yet to hear an update on that decision.  These concept art images certainly promise an ambitious vision, and hopefully Mangold can deliver the Wolverine movie fans have been longing for.

Looks like this might take place during World War 2 based on the atom bomb and set designs. A little historical context could provide some nice material to work from.

Yes, and would position him nicely to possibly appear in First Class 2? Maybe? I haven’t read anything saying he’ll be in it – just speculation. I know he had the cameo in the first one, but when has anything made sense in the X-Men movie universe beyond X2?

Eh I doubt that, maybe a flashback scene but not the entire film unless they think an adamantium-less wolverine would be awesome… not

Of all the great Wolverine story arcs it should not be hard to take one and create a screenplay. They need to stop fucking up by trying to create an original story. Go with what you know.

Um, yeah that’s what they did here. It’s based on Frank Miller’s limited series.

  • Django9000

What are they, going to graft a League of Shadows back-story to Logan like the one from Batman Begins??

Oh wait … Wolverine already HAS that backstory. With the HAND, and Silver Samurai…

So who ripped of whom here? =D

Looks like scenes out of the graphic novel Logan by Brian K. Vaughn. That would definitely make for a great opening/ introduction to the movie. I got high hopes that this is going to be a good representation of Wolverine.

As always i am hoping to finally see a top Wolverine movie but as always i have a bad feeling. I remember when Jackman was saying just how good the original movie was going to be and then they released this piece of turd that butchered everything with weird shite like wolverine leaping a hundred feet into the air during an awful helicopter sequence and doing some really strange crap with Deadpool. Hell, the movie was so bad it was in the special camp with Fantastic Four 2 where Galactus was shown to be a puff of purple smoke. Here’s hoping that one day the screen rights to this character (and all the others)end up with Marvel/Disney.
