20th Century Fox is kicking its marketing campaign for James Mangold’s (3:10 to Yuma) superhero pic The Wolverine into high gear this week, and it all started this morning with a batch of new images and two new posters.  Now comes the continuation of the “trailers for trailers” trend, as Fox has released a six-second teaser for the film’s first trailer on Vine.  It’s basically an incredibly brief flash of a lot of action with zero context, but the film does look to be fairly intense.  Also, is that Jean Grey I spot? Fox will release a 20-second teaser of the trailer tomorrow, and then on Wednesday we get the full first trailer.  Welcome to the future, folks.

Hit the jump to watch the teaser teaser trailer.  The film stars Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Brian Tee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto and Svetlana Khodchenkova.  The Wolverine opens in 3D on July 26th.

The 20-second teaser has now been posted.  Click here to check it out.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Wolverine:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

why can’t they just show the damn trailer? i’m sick of this “trailers for trailers” trend

Because they used to show trailers as far out as six months before a movie premiered, and then nothing else until then. Now, we get a full length trailer two months out. Just depends on the studio and the team doing the movie. So a brief teaser is nothing to snicker at in my book, but I agree that showing them in quick succession is a bit ridiculous. Spacing them out over a longer span of time would give people less to gripe about.

You’re totally right, and the problem is old school marketing people don’t get this. It’s all because of Social Media. I worked briefly on a marketing team for a movie whose leader was a former head of marketing for a big studio. She wanted us to have a constant stream of minor bits of info flooding Twitter and Facebook. We tried to explain to her that people hate that but she just didn’t get it. Also this being a very small low budget film we started running out of things to post months before it was supposed to be released so we ended up constantly re-posting. Social media marketing is completely different than old school marketing and some people just can’t learn to adapt whether it’s arrogance or ignorance. You’re seeing this Wolverine teaser now because they constantly want to release minor bits of info to keep people talking about it all the way until it’s released.

Sometimes the timing is right, sometimes it’s not. Personally I feel that with comic book movies you can get away with it more than other films. There always seems to be stronger buzz and speculation around these types of film and releasing little bits here and there can work as long as it’s spaced evenly.

Looks shit, they were the best bits of the movie. Ruined it for me.

Looks like just another fast paced, explosion filled popcorn movie where style overrides substance.
And the Jean Grey scene looks like a sepia laced dream. Pah lease!
