Hugh Jackman Reveals When THE WOLVERINE Takes Place; Says We’ll See an X-Men Cameo

     December 26, 2012

We’ve seen plenty of set photos from The Wolverine, and so far it looks like we were going to see Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) across plenty of locations.  One of the settings was a Japanese POW camp, so some of the movie has to take place in the past, right?  While that may still be the case, it looks like the majority of the plot will take place in the modern day.  We already knew that the movie was standalone in the sense that there wouldn’t be many mutants, and it wouldn’t pay attention to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.  But the question remains: does The Wolverine take place before X-Men or after X-Men: The Last Stand?

Hit the jump for more.  The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.

hugh-jackman-the-wolverineSpeaking to Parade [via Bleeding Cool], Jackman reluctantly revealed a couple details about The Wolverine:

You want to get me into trouble, don’t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him.

I forget how Last Stand ended other than Magneto discovering that he hadn’t really lost his powers.  I guess Wolvie would be a little bummed after having to kill Jean Grey/Phoenix, so I suppose the new movie will see him doing a little soul searching in Japan.

Jackman added,

And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.

Speculate away on who we’ll see in The Wolverine.  I’m thinking Jean Grey to haunt Wolverine, which would also establish the timeline for the audience.

Here’s the official synopsis for The Wolverine:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Halle Berry was the one doing the cameo here. At the end of The Last Stand, Wolverine was at Xavier’s school and Storm had taken over the school. I could see her cameoing at the beginning of this movie.

Since “Last Stand” isn’t liked either, I doubt they will reference it. Saying it takes place after is probably just background. Unless they are going to pull a Marvel and do a cameo leading into the next “X-Men” movie.

“I’m thinking Jean Grey” I bet you thought that after you read the credits and saw that Famke is listed. Congrats on robbin’ an article from Nuke The Fridge.

    You fail again.

You realize people can edit IMDb as they please right?

I think its Cyclops. They never showed him die in last stand and if they want him to appear in days of futures past they will have to explain his return before that movie comes out.

The only question they should ask is whether this movie will be a pile of garbage like the last one or did they actually invest some time in a good story and not rely on disastrous CGI claws.

I agree, Wolverine Origins was one of the worst movies I have ever seen – regardless of genre. How did that script ever get the green light? I imagine chimps wearing suits signing off scripts like that in crayon…..

It also says “rumored” by her name…

I always assumed Anna Paquin since she’s the only living character that’s close to him.

Well, if they pay any attention to cannon at all, and the fact that it refers to Japan, I’m suspecting some re-incantation of Lady Deathstryke from X2.

  • Cascas

Is it just me or does it look like he has bone claws in the very top picture ?

  • Cascas

Never mind , just scrool over the picture and it says its bone claws. I’d say Lady deathstrike gonna be in it as well as a Xmen from last movies.

  • Kyle Sloss

The cameo is Rogue. Wolverine always had a soft spot for her.

Well, if it has anything to do with the comics, then it should be Kitty Pryde.
