The first trailer for The Words has gone online. I really dug the film when I saw it at Sundance, but this trailer doesn’t do a good job of getting to the drama of the central conflict, which is about a writer (Bradley Cooper) who becomes famous off a plagiarized manuscript, and then has to face his actions when he meets the original author (Jeremy Irons).
Hit the jump to check out the trailer, and try not to be turned off from the use of the horrible song at the end (it isn’t in the movie, in case you were wondering). The film also stars Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, and Ben Barnes (who should have gotten a credit in the trailer since he plays a major character). The Words opens September 21st.

Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.
In their directorial debut, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal have crafted a subtle tale that examines how overwhelming desire can lead to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Why do reviewers feel the need to give away plot devices, rather than just say whether it’s good/bad?
I mean, the trailer hinted at plagiarism, but you spelled it out oh so clearly now, any suspense is gone. I didn’t know Irons was the author for example.
Film = ruined.
Oh and I came here trying to find out the song title and artist, because i thought it sounded pretty good actually. And yet you’ve written it off without crediting it.

Good job Matt. I also say the movie at Sundance, and agree with everything that you wrote. I am looking forward to seeing it again. All of the performances are strong, most especially Jeremy Irons. It is difficult to believe that a film of this caliber could be made on a limited budget. CBS films did a smart thing in picking this one up.
This movie seems well worth seeing, great actors and it seems that the directors made an amazing directorial debut.
Nice trailer though I have to agree that the song at the end is not very good, ..pity I’ll have to wait till October for this movie release in Argentina
I can’t wait to see this film. I like Bradley Cooper but I’m really a huge fan of Ben Barnes. I agree he should have been credited in the trailer.
