First Trailer for Judd Apatow’s THIS IS 40

     April 27, 2012

The first trailer for Judd Apatow’s fourth directorial effort, This Is 40, has gone online.  The film is a semi-spinoff of Apatow’s Knocked Up, as it follows the lives of the characters played by Paul Rudd and Leslie MannThe 40-Year-Old Virgin is a new classic, I was a big fan of Knocked Up, and while Funny People certainly had its issues, I enjoyed it for the most part.  That said, this trailer for This Is 40 shows huge promise.  We already know that Rudd and Mann have impeccable chemistry, but I love the idea of Apatow tackling the issues of aging and mid-adulthood through his dramedic eye.  We get a look at a couple of the bit parts from Jason Segel and Melissa McCarthy (to great comedic effect) and the end showcases Rudd’s penchant for spot-on delivery.  It’s safe to say that in a very crowded holiday release schedule, This Is 40 just jumped up towards the top of my most anticipated list.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film also stars Albert Brooks, Megan Fox, Chris O’Dowd, Lena Dunham, Ryan Lee, Charlene Yi, and Wyatt RussellThis Is 40 opens on December 21st.

Here’s a synopsis for This Is 40:

Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see firsthand how they are dealing with their current state of life.

meh. didn’t laugh once and paul rudd is my favorite comedic actor.

    • Jay McKells

Second this comment… That looks really boring. Apatow’s time is almost up.

      • Mclovin

Why can’t he make movies like the ones from 2004-2007 instead of this melodramatic girly stuff?

Better: Make a “Sarah Marshall” and “Greek” sequel where Jonah Hill meets Jonah Hill.

    • Kevin

This is merely a teaser for a film that doesn’t come out until December. Albert Brooks, Megan Fox(who are both suppose to play major roles) and many others were left out of this one, which makes sense considering the amount of time between now and the film’s release. We’ll see them, plus more plot details, as the other clips and trailers are released months from now. Apatow will deliver once again.

  • Marrowbones

People who say “meh” should have their mouths surgically attached to the anus’ of all other “urban hipsters” who use retarded terms such as “meh”, “owned”, “fail”, “no homo” or whatever other catchy sissified term happens to be in fashion right now.

“I know, right?” I stand with you Marrowbones.

      And this doesn’t look bad.

Don’t forget “Cali” and “Party Foul”.

It’s not drop dead of laughter funny, but it made me chuckle. It may not be Apatow’s funniest movie, but I like the tone and I think this will be pretty solid.

  • And I Know Funny

Looks VERY funny! And I agree with what Marrowbones said…except, just don’t say “retarded”. Seriously, it’s worse than “meh”. Thanks, Bob From Show Business

  • Singularity

The unspoken subtitle of every Judd Apatow comedy is, “It’s okay to be…”

I have a feeling this will be good, and will probably make a bunch of people over 40 feel better about being over 40.

  • junierizzle

I think people over 40 will love it. Just like people over 50 loved the Descendants.

Also, all the funny lines in the trailer will be different when you actually see the movie, just like all of Apatow’s stuff. IMO the ones in the trailer are always funnier then the ones they actually use.

  • mee

looks great, duno what you guys are talking about. i like the ‘i have extremely high nipples’ line. that girl is funny. so glad to see jason segel’s character also back from knocked up in this.

  • Singularity

Also, Paul Rudd’s hair is definitely over his ears. Didn’t we just have this hairstyle about five years ago? Is it back already? Same as Christian Bale’s in TDKR.

I am not growing my hair over my ears, Hollywood.

  • James

I didn’t laugh once. Im not saying that the film looks bad because of that, but I guess I was just expecting…more? Its only one trailer though, maybe some future ones will make me change my tune.

  • excpired

The jokes seemed like they were being laid out really stale. Leslie Mann who usually says every line in the most hilarious way possible just seemed off in this trailer and Judd Apatow has lost a lot of his glam. I suppose that might be the point but whatever they were going for didn’t really work in this trailer. Perhaps it’ll work out better in a whole feature, perhaps not.

I’ll definitely see it at some point because its Paul Rudd.

  • dpramroop

wait till red band teaser, then we will see some real humor

  • Jesus Christ

Looks like Sandlers’ stink has corrupted Apatow. I just hope that 50 Year Old Virgin isn’t as awful as Funny People.
