The 1956 Cecil B. DeMille classic “The Ten Commandments” is fantastic but it could have been so much better if it had used speed-ramping and buckets of blood. Oh, and maybe a Jewish actor as Moses. It now looks like we might get two out of three as 20th Century Fox has just made a pre-emptive acquisition of a pitch to tell the story of Moses in the style of Zach Snyder’s “300″. Hit the jump to murder some firstborn sons but in a really cool way.
This is one of those pitches I wish I had made. It seems so simple yet so idiotic that a sane person would shoot it down before they even seriously considered it. But sane folks like you and I aren’t in Hollywood for a reason and that’s why BFDeal Memo is reporting that Peter Chernin’s Fox-based company will produce the story of Moses’ near death as an infant, his adoption into the Egyptian royal family, his awakening to his Judaism by a flaming, talking bush, and his deliverance of the Jews out of Egypt through skillful use of plagues and the Red Sea. All this…in the style of “300″. The script will be written by Adam Cooper and Bill Collage who will include new elements based of Rabbinical Midrash and other historical sources because the Torah makes no mention of Moses kicking a guy into a bottomless pit. Also, if some rabbi made a vague allusion to a hot love interest who can be played by an actress willing to go topless for a sex scene with Moses, that would be awesome.
Cooper and Collage recently “re-invented” Moby Dick with a graphic novel feel for “Wanted” director Timur Bekmambetov. With the script finished and the extensive pre-viz done, it could be Bekmambetov’s next project if “Wanted 2″ doesn’t come together first. Also, Bekmambetov would have to finish kicking himself for being with dumb Moby Dick when he could have had a movie about Moses in the style of “300″. And if you don’t love these screenwriters enough already, they also wrote the latest draft of “Tower Heist” which Brett Ratner will direct for Universal and Imagine. Thank God for delivering the Jews out of Egypt and for blessing us with two insane idiots like Cooper and Collage. I can’t wait for all these movies.

Why should a Jewish actor, necessarily, play Moses? A Greek actor didn’t play Spartacus (in fact, Kirk Douglas, a Jewish actor, did). And the 1958 movie The Vikings starred Jewish actors Tony Curtis and Kirk Douglas (again) as well as Italian-American Ernest Borgnine. It’s called acting!
It’s called humor. It’s amusing to see Heston play Moses because we forget that Moses was Jewish and our image of Jewish male looks nowhere near Charlton Heston.
