New Images and Cringe-Worthy Clip from THIS MUST BE THE PLACE Starring Sean Penn

     May 20, 2011

Watching the first clip from the upcoming drama This Must Be the Place, I can’t help but think that star Sean Penn was re-watching I Am Sam and though to himself, “Yeah, I can top that.”  So instead of going full-retard, Penn is going full old-rock-star parody.  We’ve already seen his Robert Smith-inspired attire, but wait until you hear how Penn decides to deliver dialogue.  It sounds like a cross between a nerdy teenager and present-day Ozzy Osbourne.  It’s awful and I can’t tell if co-star Frances McDormand is embarrassed or just trying really hard not to laugh.

Oh, for those that don’t know about the plot, it’s about an aged rock star who decides to follow in his late father’s footsteps and become a Nazi hunter.  I’m not making that up.  Hit the jump to check out new images from the film along with the glorious clip.  This Must Be the Place also stars newcomer Eve Hewson as a gothic-punk music fan who is close friends with Penn’s character, Cheyenne.

Here’s the official synopsis for This Must Be the Place:

Cheyenne is a former rock star.

At 50 he still dresses “Goth” and lives in Dublin off his royalties .

The death of his father, with whom he wasn’t on speaking terms, brings him back to New York.

He discovers his father had an obsession: to seek revenge for a humiliation he had suffered.

Cheyenne decides to pick up where his father left off, and starts a journey, at his own pace, across America.

Don’t judge too quickly, this looks like a great dark comedy with heart. At least someone is doing something new!

  • Jim

Wow. I thought that was a “Funny or Die” sketch.

Bender, this isn’t something new. Pretentious crap has been happening in Hollywood for years. Let’s call this what it is, cinematic masturbation. Only made to please the director and actors, no one else.

  • Daniel Cardone

It does seem like a performance that will make a lot more sense in context – it reminds me of ‘Being There’ with Peter Sellers.

  • junierizzle

    It just feels off.

  • Excpired

I agree with Jim, this is just pretentious crap. Monotone never works in acting, it always makes the actor seem stiff and incapable of mimicking real humans.

Sean Penn looks ridiculous with the getup to, this movie looks like a big mistake.

    Edward Scissorhands meets Forrest Gump?

WTF happened to Sean Penn? He used to make great movies, now it’s like he went to the Nic Cage school of weird and had Charlie Sheen pick his movie roles for him. Robert Smith meets a 15 year old emo kid, and decides to hunt nazi’s, but first they transplant their personalities into Sean Penn after he’s started the hormone injections. Even though he’s still in the Pre-Op stage here………Sean Penn looks like a tranny.

Her name is Eve Hewson. Hewson. Not Newsome. Hewson. As in Paul Hewson. As in Bono. Her father. Hewson.

    Crack reporting, there, collider.

      Sorry, fixed.

typical MATT GOLDBERG.. always negative reactions to anything. i thought he will change by now because a lot of people visiting collider are noticing his cynicism. i mean, even a news about Nolan shooting at Pittsburgh, he still manages to imprint his negative comments on the article.

thank god Adam Chitwood reported the new transformers trailer and the Conan documentary trailer. otherwise, if Goldberg reported it, we’ll get Headlines like “Another loud but stupid Transformers trailer” or comments like “Bay thinks he can excite us by blowing up a city” or ” a Conan doc doesn’t seem needed in our society”. lighten up Matt! don’t be such a film-snob!
