Of all the Marvel movies released thus far (and this includes those made outside the Marvel Studios banner), Thor has been the toughest sell. He comes from a different world, that world has funny costumes and architecture, and he has to convincingly exist in both Asgard and our mundane world. But somehow the film, despite some various issues in plotting (particularly in regards to the romance and the ending), came together in a fun way that effectively sold the character. And now that the film has raked in $437 million world, Marvel and Disney have decided to release the sequel on July 26, 2013. Marvel’s Iron Man 3 is already set for May 3, 2013.
Deadline reports that Kenneth Branagh won’t return to direct but will stay on in a producing capacity. The split was reportedly amicable and now we can start a new sweepstakes to see who will take the reigns of the series. Chris Hemsworth will return but no other casting announcements have been made.
i always “love” how these sites say it raked 437 mill,as it is already over, but thor still has one of the biggest markets to play at-JAPAN.with that in mind 455-460 million would be its final number…

Interesting point. The long-term profitability of the character might also be hard to measure once he gets thrown into the Disney theme park mix.
Considering the recent explosion in Hemsworth’s star, I’m not sure if Thor caused or benefitted from his recently-increased profile… although, at this point, it may not matter either way.
I’ve not been able to watch THOR yet but M already excited for Chris Hemsworth coming back
this is great news! i personally enjoyed the first Thor even more than the first Iron Man. I think my Avengers Ratings so far are
1. Thor
2. Iron Man
3. Iron Man 2
4. The Incredible Hulk
I think mine would be The Incredible Hulk #1 Thor#2 Ironman #3 Ironman2 #4
Wonderful news! Loved the film and Chris Hemsworth is a great fit for Thor, really charming and charismatic.
Great news!
Whoever was responsible for the casting of this film deserves a promotion.
I dont know. Thor isnt my fav superhero from Marvel, so I dont know
loved thor but no Kenneth Branagh ?? that’s real bad news
At first I thought it wouldn’t work out great but Thor was great and better than excepted, the best comic book movie of the year so far along with X-Men: First Class.
Great news that there is going to be a sequel, I hope Kenneth Branagh would stay as a producer if he isn’t going to direct the sequel.
Best Marvel Studios film since Iron Man, hopefully the sequel turns out well.
does this mean that by the end of September we’ll get word on a Captain America sequel? One can only hope…
Just some directors to be looked at bigger known ones such as Verbinski, Gilliam, Greengrass. Then some lesser known ones Kosinski, Stanton, Joe Cornish, Len Wiseman, McTeigue, Unkrich.
Kenneth will come back to direct if the studio threatens to hire Nanny McPhee as director. Emma? No!!!
Personally, I would rank the movies as….
1. Thor
2.The Incredible Hulk
3. Ironman
4. Ironman 2
Wohoo! What awesome news!
I was PRAYING for a sequel since the end credits of Thor.
Pitty that Kenneth Branagh won’t direct, but it’s so great that Chris Hemsworth will be back! Let’s hope for Tom Hiddleston, too. (If nothing too bad happens to him in Avengers^^)
Uh, that really made my day
The best thing about Thor were the scenes between Anthony Hopkins and Tom Hiddleston. The rest of the movie played out like a lame 80′s Superman movie.
Awww… no more Gilderoy Lockheart as director? Bummer.
Then again directors who made successful first movies for a franchise aren’t always a guarantee to strike gold twice.
See John Favreau for example;
His Iron Man was great. His Iron Man 2… meh:P
