The villainous role in Thor: The Dark World may finally have been filled by Christopher Eccleston (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra). We’ll keep the identity of that particular villain until after the jump for those of you who like to avoid such information. Suffice it to say, we were right when we recently reported who we thought the villain might be. And let’s not forget, the Marvel sequel will still include Loki (Tom Hiddleston), it’s just that this time around he’ll have a little more bad to balance out the good. Hit the jump for more details.
If you’ve been paying attention, you know that we had some pretty good evidence suggesting that Malekith the Accursed had our bet for the sequel’s villain. Now Deadline reports that Eccleston is in final negotiations for the role. Eccleston was previously seen as The Rider in The Seeker: The Dark is Rising and, of course, as the starring role in the series, Doctor Who.
The Marvel sequel’s title of The Dark World suggested that Thor (Chris Hemsworth) would be facing some Dark Elves this time around and Malekith just so happens to be their leader. Here’s a bit more info on the character (via Wikipedia):
Malekith has all the normal attributes of a member of the race of dark elves, although his abilities are as a result of above average development. He possesses a gifted intellect, and superhuman strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes.
As a dark elf, Malekith also has the ability to manipulate the forces of magic for a variety of effects, including teleportation, energy projection, physical malleability, flight (by transforming into mist) illusion casting, and the ability to change the shape and appearance of other beings or objects.
Malekith has a vulnerability to iron, which disrupts or cancels his magical spells.
We also previously supposed that a popular comic plot may be used in the film, one which had Loki teaming up with Malekith to track down the Casket of Ancient Winters. We’ve seen the Casket, we’re familiar with Loki and now we’ve got our Malekith. There is still no confirmation on this account but the pieces are in place. How do you feel about the casting? Let us know in the comments below!
Directed by Alan Taylor, the Thor: The Dark World is slated for release on November 8th, 2013.

^ Great. More scenes with Loki crying like a little b*tch
Eccleston is a great choice for Malekith. He’s a great actor, and he’s definitely got the tall, lanky build to pull the whole Dark Elf look off. This has really gotten me excited about the movie. The first one was okay, but with Alan Taylor, and the nineth Doctor I’ve got high hopes for the movie.
He kind of looks like Laufey.
Great Casting. Eccleston’s a fantastic actor, and I totally buy him as a Dark Elf.
The Ninth Doctor! I like this very much.
Mr. Eccleston is a fantastic (see what I did there? hehe) actor. If this ends up being true, I can die happy. So excited to see the next installment of Thor!
Mr. Eccleston better step up his game cause Tom Hiddleston just chews up the screen. He does a really great job with the character. You almost want him to succeed. Loki is one of the better villans out there.
Better? Tom Hiddleston is to Marvel to what Heath Ledger was to The Dark Knight
like the 9th Doctor would say
FANTASTIC.
I forgot what happened to Loki at the end of The Avengers. Can anyone refresh my memory please? And yes, Eccleston is an excellent choice.
Thor took Loki and the Cosmic Cube back to Asgard for safekeeping and some Odin-style justice.
Ugh! I still want to see Enchantress in this sequel, as three villains would be epic! I want Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 to be even bigger than The Avengers ever was. This would be the most justified lead up to the biggest, most expensive, most overwhelming movie to be dawned on the big screen. Speaking of Thor, my kids lost my Blu-ray copy, so I just sent for it from my Blockbuster @Home. My Dish coworker came over to watch all of The Avengers prequel movies, just before seeing The Avengers. Blockbuster @Home really is the best way to get my Blu-ray movies for the least amount of money, and I can keep the movie as long as I want to without overage fees.
Eccleston is a great actor and he is an even better villian. I loved hating him in “Gone in 60 seconds.”
