Cameos are becoming commonplace in Marvel’s movies. After Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) appearance after the credits in Iron Man and the revelation of Thor’s hammer Mjolner after the credits in Iron Man 2, fans are expecting to see some kind of cameo in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor. We may now know what that cameo will be.
For those who don’t mind a minor spoiler, hit the jump. Thor stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, and Anthony Hopkins. It opens in 3D on May 6, 2011.
The Wrap is reporting that Jeremy Renner will be making a cameo appearance as Hawkeye at some point in Thor. Their source would not elaborate on when Hawkeye (real name Clint Barton) would appear in Thor or the details of that appearance.
In November 2009, Empire Online speculated that Renner would appear in Thor post-credits like Jackson in Iron Man. The Oscar-nominated actor told Empire:
“If I was a betting man, I would bet that Hawkeye would probably show up in Thor, and then be in The Avengers. But do I know for sure? I can’t say. But I’d love for that to happen. It’d be fun.”
A month later, Renner walked back his statement, telling Movieline:
“That was just one of those things that got blown way out of proportion. The only reason it came out this early, because Avengers is two years away, is that they’re thinking OK, we may throw him in Thor, we may not, as a cameo. You know what I mean? So there’s truth that we talked about it, but there’s no truth to me doing it.”
The Wrap’s source has reportedly seen an early cut of Thor and confirms Renner’s appearance in the film. Their source also confirmed that Jackson’s Nick Fury would not be in the film.
For those who aren’t familiar with Hawkeye, the character has no superpowers, but excels at using a bow-and-arrow. He’s also in peak physical conditions and is trained in martial arts.
The character is one of the lead roles in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers. Renner will co-star with Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Chris Evans (Captain America), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Samuel L. Jackson, and Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk). The film is slated to open in 3D on May 4, 2012.
