Collider reader “Dan” has sent us some concept art of Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Earlier today, we ran a story about AICN landing concept art of Chris Evans in his Captain America outfit. While we were very circumspect about saying these images were official, it is telling that both of these images have leaked today and they have the same artistic style. You can also see how they compare to the official shot Marvel released in April.
What’s especially cool about these Thor images is it’s the first shot we’ve seen of the Norse god wielding his hammer, Mjolner. It’s cool that not only does the top of the hammer glow, but you’ll notice that the grip also emanates blue light. It’s also interesting to see the size of Mjolner in proportion to Thor’s body. Of course, it’s not the size of the hammer, but how you use it. How it’s used in Thor is probably leveling buildings and fighting Norse gods.
Hit the jump to stop with the less-than-clever innuendo and check out the concept art. Thor hits theaters on May 6, 2011.
For those who don’t know, Thor is being directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet). The film also stars Natalie Portman as love-interest Jane Foster, Anthony Hopkins as Thor’s papa, Odin, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the film’s villain. The film also stars Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone), Tadanobu Asano (Mongol), and Joshua Dallas (The Descent: Part 2) as the Warriors Three; Idris Elba (The Wire) as Heimdall, Stellan Skarsgard (Angels & Demons) as Selvig, and Jaimie Alexander (Kyle XY) as Sif.

I'm not really feeling the cape, at all!
it’s ridiculous ! The cape , the shinning hammer and the fancy hair ?!!!
Do you even know who Thor is..?
i guess they don,t another crappy movie about thor

They cant lose the cape. He already looks young. Without the cape, he’ll really look like Thunderstrike.
That last picture looks like Will Ferrel.
I’m thinking more like the late Heath Ledger. Will is a bit, well, doughy.

Not to be a total buzz kill but, Captain America & Thor are better left in the realm of animation & print. Otherwise, they'll just look foolish as 'live action' superheroes.
Besides, having the Incredible Hulk as THE main nemesis in the much touted 2012 “Avengers” film is quite frankly s-t-u-p-i-d. Hulk is not a villain. Stick to the storyline in the Ultimate Avengers. It would make for a much more interesting film imo.
I think your right about Thor. At least lose the cape. But Cap. Would be fun to see on film. Spidy was awsome. So cap will be cool, it’s that Tror I’m trippin off of. And Hulk is a bad guy if you think of the life he takes and how the gov. might look at it. He needs to be stopped. Looking at it from Banner’s eye’s he is a good guy. But not in the eye’s of the public.
What do you mean loose the cape? don’t you reap comics? They are doing 616 Thor not ultimate Thor they have to keep the cap unless they wanna change him completely and make him a guy who finds a belt.

If you read the Ultimates, the Hulk WAS the villain for a good portion. And I can’t imagine Cap or Thor looking sillier in live action than Spider-man. Or the Hulk for that matter.
YES YOUR RIGHT HE IS NOT A VILLAIN BUT HE DOES GET OUT OF CONTROL AND THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN STOP HIM ARE THE AVENGERS. READ COMIC THE ULTIMATES(SUPER-HUMAN) THE HULK DESTROYS MANHATTAN MAKING THE AVENGERS FIGHT HIM.
Yeah, but if you look at the Hulk Movie there using, which is different from the comics, then it seems that banner has some control over the Hulk, and he doesen’t seem like much of a villain anymore.

ok the hulk has been a bad guy several times…… he gets pissed and wants to hit shit…. pure and simple. which means the avengers have to stop him. go read the comics.

you gotta remember dude that The Hulk was only in the Avengers for a issue and a half an it’s Thor half brother Loki that tricks them into thinking he was the villain. See you are one of those I started reading comics when they got fancy dudes The Ultimate Avengers is not how the Avengers story was told that’s some crap a bunch of young guys took poetic licensing with.

Aren't they going with the original Avengers arc where Loki tricks Hulk, which is what ends up making him the villain?
From what I hear, Hulk starts as the villain, but by the end they take down Loki, or something to that effect. I could very easily be wrong, however.
you are very right
you are very right
Hulk is an unstopable force of rage and hatred, in the comics the avengers where assembled for the sole purpose of defeating the Hulk cause alone Thor, Iron Man, and Captin America all got there butts handed to them. Personally I like the costumes and would like to see the Hulk beating up on all three of them for the first part of the movie and then through appropriatly executed circumstances eventually teaming up with them to defeat the final villian.
Captain America wasn;t even with the Avengers at the time. He was on ice.
I don't know what Marvel Comics you've been reading, but the Hulk has been cast in the antagonist role more times than I can count.Hell, the Avengers first assembled to fight him because he was being manipulated by Loki.So Hulk being the initial villain isn't so far fetched.
I think these might actually be marketing stills… the kind of character shots you usually see on boxes of Fruit Roll Ups or Skittles or whatever.
actually, this makes me optimistic for captain america more than anything else. I know the feel of the Thor costume from the actual pic, and feel its a big improvement. if that same jump applies to thor, then were in business.
My thoughts exactly.
Based on these pics, I think the villains in Thor should be Ziegfreid and Roy.
hahaha
Is that a pride float I see on the Rainbow Bridge?
I'm really liking this concept art. Love Thor's look, glad there isn't a helmet. Still not liking Mjolner, but I'm not exactly the target demographic on that any way. Good deal Marvel.
Mjolner just looks a little small to me, don’t you think? Hopefully that’s just a flaw of the concept art.
It does look a tad small. More like what a regular man would wield, not a god. One thing I liked about the Ultimate Version is how large Mjolner looked and it’s shape. This seems to retain the shape of the original universe, but still looks a bit small, yes.
Why does it look so rubbery? Why so “modern” looking? I norse god of Thunder does not wear rubber-chainmail and combat boots. Look at his bracers? They look like rejects from the set of some sci-fi movie. And look all, the discs on his jacket (supposed to be a tunic) glow too. Is this a freaking Tron character? Look, why does this movie have to interpet Thor’s current costume instead of using the exact thing?
The Asgardians in the comics are an alien race. They might have some different looking armor than you may think.
I honestly can’t understand how some people will totally buy the concept of an alien god coming to earth and teaming up with a man in a robot suit and a WW2 vet who has been frozen in ice for 60 years to fight a monster made of Edward Norton and radiation, but who just draw the line at “rubbery” armor.

to add to Pickletron, this concept art matches fairly nicely to what was shown in the comics, not exactly but similar. Also this is concept.

fuck u… It looks cool like that…
The other one looks like total homo…

I predict Rex Reed will love this movie.
Me too and I'm open on Mjolner – I'd rather wait and see it with realistic VFX rather than a single concept artistry type still, assuming these are legit of course.
Mjoliner
mljonir
it's “Mjolnir!!!”
http://marvel.com/universe/Thor_%28Thor_Odinson%29
Mjolnir (correct spelling) was supposed to be the size and shape of a smith’s hammer in the original Norse myths; as Thor was the god of Thunder; the noise of the thunder and the lightning being results of him forging the clouds, the rain being the result of him tempering them. So me me the size is just right; Mjolnir was never supposed to be a battle hammer sized weapon but a smith’s hammer which could be used as a weapon

Agreed. These images do have me more interested in seeing the overall look of the Universe in this film. To be optimistic, Thor looks like he will fit in visually with the rest of the Avengers nicely.
whats up with those boots? jesus.
NOBODY could pull off that cheesy costume. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be so faithful to the source material.
I have a few issues with the costume. I'd like to see the tunic look a little more cloth like, not so much like metal or plastic. The glowing Mjolnir seems like a really unnecessary photoshop. That being said, Chris Hemsworth does look like what I would expect Thor to look like and much of the rest of the costume is a very nice modern interpretation of Thor.
More than anything, this makes me want to see some actual scenes in the movie. A lot of what will make this movie good as a fan is the acting. If the actors don't nail down the attitude just right, it'll be a huge disappointment.
I hope he does have a helmet. I used to collect Thor starting with #383 when it first hit the newsstands and backtracked the early issues, some in reprints. He has to have his helmet. His cape should also be much more billowy like in the Walter Simonson issues. I hope Mjolnir doesn’t have a constant glow, sure its Uru metal but that doesn’t mean it glows. And he needs to have those spade shaped knee coverings. And he shouldn’t hava beard. The first time Mighty Thor had a beard during his battle with the Midgard Serpent, wearing his special gold armor since his body was jelly after the impacts. Issue 382 if I remember correctly. It had no word balloons.
“Who's the chick with the hammer?”
“I don't know, but I'm she's on our side.”
“I'm GLAD she's on our side.”
if they are sticking to the ultimate avengers plot then Hulk really is the first enemy… not because of Loki but because of Bruce Banner being jealous…
I really hate it when I do that.
The quote's from the Ultimate Avengers cartoon at the part where they are fighting the Hulk, which is based on the Ultimate Avengers comic where they fight Hulk. Which is an awesome idea for the movie and played out awesome.
As for Thor. Kenneth Branagh directing = awesome!
not liking the cast… Chris does not look anything close to Thor… and they are making the last Punisher guy into Volstagg?…
hate to be negative as i love the marvel movies so far (iron mans and hulk) but this is hard to stomach and take seriously. how will the general public react to it?
Since when did Alienware get into the design concept business?
looks too futuristic, should have made him more viking-esque
Lool. Some german guy found this http://neinjaerledigtlos.blogspot.com/2010/06/t… and fuck, it's true! Thor looks like Zaphod from the Hitchhikers Guide!!!
HAHAHA! is this Will Farrels next movie? i wish it were!
A helmet may have taken away the look of the blow dry BeeJee style hair….
Oh, wait,… a helmet would look ridiculous, right?
Its so bloody fake! There is no way in hell that this is Thor. We all know its fake.
Just bring on the bloody real costume already.
This is turning out to be a comedy. LOL!
someone forgot to take the medicine . . . . . . .
Beat me to it. Bingo!
No they changed this a bit, it's not actually Loki who has brainwashed and tricked Hulk, it's actually the Skrull who will be tricking Hulk and brainwashing him.
Actually it is Batman a.k.a the Dark Knight who tricks them all and then is taken out at the end by Bob Lee Swagger from Shooter and this is the connection to Will Ferrel. It’s going to be a good movie.

Why do the folks making these movies feel the need to put the characters in these plastic/rubber blo-mold costumes? Thor should have an old world feel to his costume because unlike other superheroes what Thor wears are His everyday clothes. Thor does not wear a costume. There are parts of this suit I think work fine. The chest section and the cape are okay. The boots look like something a BMX kid might wear. The hammer looks plastic. The hammer should look like a stone mason cut the thing and stuck a leather wrapped wooden handle in it. It's an old world weapon, not a computer designed high tech devise. Period.
thatbigape- You're right they're really upped the hi-tech look. Looks like they really are going sci-fi for Thor.
That's one puny hammer. He totally has to have a Chihuahua in the other hand.
they're more like zeus in clash, beyond ancient earth tech, think of them as aliens.
compensation.
This is probably his present day costume. I like it
If this is not awesome, I don't know what is. But still no helmet?
On my opinion its is looking like a Power Ranger!
Simply Amazing!!!
Looks way too fake. T_T
@ ghost rider, hulk is a villain in the comics numerous of times…get ur facts straight also these photos are an artistic style (either painted or a filter over a the real photo) he will look ALOT better in film and in action.
He needs to upgrade from the handbag sized hammer, lame.
“Mjolner”…
It's Mjolnir… Jeeze.
The pant and the boot is totally not right… this is not a god. Not even a comics god. Its wrong. A Rock star's pant and a pair of Punk's boot, way wrong.
i wonder how many people who comment actually read the comics and have a basic knowledge of the marvel universe…
It's like there trying to avoid the fact that the costume is supposed to be viking based. Throw in a token cloak and breast plate. and does batman know he borrowed his boots? sorry but the only Hulk this guy looks like he should be fighting is Hulk Hogan.
Im scandinavian and I can tell you that this is not Thor
