New Trailer for THOR

     February 17, 2011

Marvel has released a new trailer for Thor.  Some of the stuff I love, especially the look of Asgard and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) chucking Mjolner in to the face of a frost giant. But then there’s other stuff that makes the scale of the picture look dinky. Watching Destroyer (the metal, fire-faced guy) blow up the local Piggly-Wiggly doesn’t seem to fit with the epic tone director Kenneth Branagh seems to want. And as for the humor, it’s also a mixed bag. I chuckled at Thor smashing a coffee cup and demanding more of the delicious beverage, but then Kat Dennings’ joke about putting him on Facebook feels tired. I want Thor to be good, but I’m currently more optimistic about Marvel’s other big flick this summer, Captain America: The First Avenger.

It opens in 3D on May 6, 2011.

Here’s the official synopsis for Thor:

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the epic adventure, “Thor,” which spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth by his father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and is forced to live among humans. A beautiful, young scientist, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), has a profound effect on Thor, as she ultimately becomes his first love. It’s while here on Earth that Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

trailer is fucking amazing,i dont know what you talking about.and those funny scenes are funny, not corny

  • anthony

kat dennings character is reallyy reallyyyyy annoying and not funny

  • Chris

I really don’t like this. All of the cheesy humor a-la the whole “oh this is so going on Facebook” scares the heck out of me. Also, I keep watching these trailers and the moments shown seems boring and dull. I think of all the upcoming Marvel movies, this one’s going to be the black sheep.

    • excpired

It’s a good thing comic nerds never are the ones to decide if the comic film will be good. I mean, they all bitched about Star Trek not having a 1 hour lead-in convo w/ the great council or some shit, and then they complain about realism but all the movies to adopt realism end up being good and the ones that try to be chintzy end up being pure crap.

    • LAME

      Agree. This looks like shit.
I don’t know why too many excited people out there. Looks like Thor got a bad screenwriting job. It’s gonna be a bad film, despite the visuals (which is the reason why people say “Wow” to this crap).

Wow whoever has been cutting these trailers definitely sucks but got lucky with this one b/c this actually is starting to look good.

  • Wolstenholme

I agree, I don’t know why they have to modernize things so much with all the things like a fb mention…and Kat Dennings character definitely sucks…they probably think they are cornering the kinda hot in the right light goth chicks with her

    • Terry

I know! I hate when they have to water down the movie to meet the inept standards of the new generation. FB? Kiss my a**!!!!
And you know they showed all the best parts in the trailer. Essentially we saw the movie. It’ll do well opening weekend, then fall off about 60% the next. Overall that crap will barley make its production cost.
And who hasn’t called it. That is why would Portman do this cheesy sh**? Cause the studios knew they had a turkey with its giblets hanging out and needed some “credible” star power to make up its shortcomings.
      Just my two cents.

  • Andy

This looks like complete shit. From the acting to the embarrassing CG, and everything in between. All in all, that was a shockingly terrible trailer.

  • Wolstenholme

Andy, I think you’re in the minority there pal

  • truthinessman

    Well it gave me goosebumps…

  • Findley

Bleh. The overexposed Natalie Portman brings her agony face (had enough of it in Black Swan…). And isn’t that Luke’s Diner from the Gilmore Girls? (I don’t think it is, but sure looks like it.) Snooze.

much better than the first trailer, but still nothing to go crazy about. enough with the facebook jokes already.

    • joe mix

have to agree, the “comedy” just feels forced…

  • woofmonster

I really really really really really want to like this movie… but so far the trailers aren’t doing anything for me. I’m still going to go see it but I’m just hoping that whoever is cutting the trailers is trying to sabotage the movie and this isn’t really the best of what’s to come.

  • excpired

OMFG you Kat Dennings hater’s! This trailer was awesome and her lines were sooo funny, clearly you just hate her. Probably because shes an actress with large breasts.

Captain America looks pretty dumb so far, though it is looking better. I am totally sold on Thor, I’d be willing to bet that Thor will come out like Iron Man did and Captain America is going to turn out like the Superman movie.

    • Wolstenholme

You gottta be fucking kidding me…men hating a woman for having large breasts…please more like she’s not that funny

  • Gene

I am looking forward to this very much. Kat Denning’s humor wasn’t awful but not great. Looks very exciting though.

  • Plexo

Where’s the flying???!? I haven’t seen Thor take to the sky yet!!

  • madcnut

Still cringe everytime Thor opens his mouth. Execution is god awful from everyone in these trailers.

  • GerryA

It doesn’t need to say ‘in 3D’ at the end, as you could figure as much by the amount of times a cg- hammer goes hurtling towards the camera. What’s the big deal? I can throw a hammer. I can throw a hammer in the morning, I can throw a hammer in the evening, all over this land!

Zack Hemsey should get out there and start calling in those royalties as the music in that trailer is a poor ‘Mind Heist’ rip off. BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR……….

Can’t make out if this is a movie or a video game with all that CG all over the place.

I’m surprised by all the hate. I think it looks pretty awesome. Both this and Captain America will have my money this summer. I would have appreciated more of a LOTR look to the Asgard stuff, but regardless, it has a cool feel to it. I was glad to see more shots of frost giants and the like. Thor should be fighting giant monsters and such.

  • ChrstopherS

omg u ppl r such whinny little infants…u kno ur gonna go watch the movie anyway, and if ur not well ur loss, ill be n there!

I’ve never been a Thoron (heheh), but I really have trouble understanding how this could have been done much different. I mean, conceptually, it’s one of the harder comics to adapt due to the HUGE amount of disbelief suspension it takes to make it work.

Most superheroes you have a few base concepts to accept (parents killed, left fortune, use fortune to fight crime in bat suit. Radioactive spider bite, proportionate spider powers, fight crime with spider powers. Weapons manufacturer / industrialist billionaire use fortune to make robo suit to fight crime).

Thor has an entire mythology that’s been bent and twisted to fit into Marvel’s sci-fi ruled universe. Mythology alone is a tough sell – sticking what amounts to a cybernetic enhancement on top of all that makes it DOUBLY so.

The Thor comics have had over 40 years to flesh themselves out – and there have been some really BAD volumes in there, too. I’d go a little easy on a two hour piece of summer fun.

    • Bill Graham

I couldn’t agree more. Don’t forget how everyone… and I mean EVERYONE, reacted when THOR was first announced. People thought it was going to be shit. It’s hard to adapt into a feature film because there is a lot to cram in and make it feel appropriate without being outright silly. You HAVE to have a sense of humor about this world because you can’t take it too seriously. If you do, you threaten to take everything that makes THOR fun out of the equation. He has to be a cocky ass and our world will clash with him.

that facebook joke was half a second. They didn’t dwell on it or continue down that path. I think it looks pretty good, personally. I’m not going to be first in line, but I’ll go opening day. The CGI in parts looks kinda poor, but some of the creatures they have to create are absurd. Lighten up people. It’s a summer blockbuster.

      • ringbearer1420

Not to mention that Stan Lee and Jack Kirby had lots of similar humor in the comics.

  • Django

I’m with Bill Graham on this one.
Not to mention- wasn’t Collider leading the cheer after those
awesome backstage tours & interviews you guys got 2 seconds ago?
Lighten up! This looks like a ton of epic fun- and as if you guys wouldn’t hang
out w girls who have facebook accounts. You just wish Kat Dennings were takin a pic of you, brotha!
Heathens, hypocrites and knee-jerks- the lot o’ ya!
    I say thee nay!
(which he’d better say in the film. Given the dialogue from this trailer, I’m a little more hopeful. Anybody who got their hands on that script confirm this for me? Thx.)

  • ringbearer1420

All the negative comments about this could easily be made about the Green Lantern preview (I’d take Kat Dennings or GL black haired assistant any day) but these both such great characters, their both helmed by great directors, and I’d pretty much give them both benifit of the dobt.
Every comic book movie is going to have it’s weak points, and while many jipp you out of actually experiencing that characters world (cough X-Men) this already looks guaranteed to at least be insanely visually stunning.

  • Kevin

the delivery of the facebook line is cheesy. you might think anything with a facebook “joke” is cheesy because there are those sort of people who have to act like stuff like facebook is “gay, bro.” it fit the tone of the trailer and it was actually a funny scene. if you had any clue about the actual movie, you’d know the difference between the trailer, which is marketing to a wide audience, and the film, which 2/3rds of it takes place in Asgard, which is hardly in the trailer. or maybe you don’t like the Ultimates version of Thor. My advice, go read that and then run your mouths about what appears to be a fucking excellent job making a Thor movie that has everything and is epic in scope rather than flailing in its excessiveness.

wtf is this shit,i hope all these scenes aren’t the best the movie has to offer otherwise it will fail after it’s opening weekend

  • Chasing Skies

everyone on here just wants to complain. why? thinking someone may see what you write and ACTAULLY think like you and kiss your feet? you cant dog a movie before it comes out. we dont know yet that all the best things were in the trailer cause well… you havent seen the movie. calm down and put your dicks back in your pants for a while until the movie comes out. as far as Captain America, i CAN say that it is gunna surprise a lot of people. now i havent seen it with the last minute CGI touches that they were putting in… but Thor better give a high bar for Evans to jump over or Cap will overshadow Thor with incredible ease.

  • MAXQ1961

The trailer is awesome and I think we only get a sliver of the action that will occur. The Destroyer may make you wish he only blew up the Piggly-Wiggly, for he is only just beginning his mass destruction. He does take on S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents and the Warriors 3 too but I am sure he will take on a bigger adversary. Marvel is making a great set of movies. IR: exceptional, IR2 AND HULK very good.
