THOR’s Hammer Strikes another Talented Actor as Idris Elba Comes on Board

If you’ve seen The Wire, you know that Idris Elba is a ridiculously talented actor who has yet to become a massive success stateside.  But now that’s just a matter of time as he already appeared last season on The Office (which didn’t really utilize his talent but a lot of folks watch it, myself included), will appear next year in the comic book action flick The Losers and now he’s landed a role in Kenneth Branagh’s upcoming adaptation of Marvel’s Thor.

Show some respect to Stringer Bell and hit the jump for details.

thor_heimdall_comic_book_image_01.jpgAccording to Heat Vision Blog, Elba will play “Heimdall; as the guardian of Asgard, he stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.”  Now that’s pretty damn cool, not just because everyone else in Asgard is apparently too lazy to defend their own damn city, but because Norse mythology doesn’t really have any black guys.  As you can see from the image to your right, Heimdall is a Caucasian gentleman, much like the people of Scandinavia who created Norse mythology.  But while they may not have cast Idris Elba in a movie based on their god of thunder, they would have done it in a heartbeat if they had seen an episode of The Wire.  And yes, I’m working under the assumption that ancient Scandinavians would know about film and television.

For those just tuning in, Thor is based off the popular Marvel comic created by Stan Lee.  The movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) a Norse God banished to Earth for his arrogance and reckless behavior in the Asgard, the capital city of the Norse Gods.  On Earth, he falls in love with a nurse named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), but must become a true hero when his sinister brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) brings the darkest forces of Asgard to wreak destruction on humanity.  Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet), the film co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano.

Thor is slated to hit theaters on May 20, 2011.

all the cast choices have been spot on. what the hell is up with this?

oh yea. they need a black guy in it or the african american society of equal rights and all those people will bitch and moan like they did with clint eastwoods movie “Flags of Our Fathers”

i don’t care if he’s a good actor. It doesnt fit the god damn mythology.
While i have no doubt the movie will be good, this is a casting error not unlike Michael lark Duncan as The Kingpin in “Daredevil”

    ugh.

Comparing Idris Elba to Michael Clark Duncan because they’re black is like comparing Mads Mikkelsen to Andre the Giant because they both have funny accents.

If you have seen any of Elba’s dramatic work you know he is a great pick. He has the physical present for action and enough talent to easily handle this type of material.

The only good thing about Daredevil is that it taught future superhero productions what not to do, and as casting alone has shown from Thor, they aren’t looking to do this half ass.

Hey you libtard. Only idiots like want to see the cast of movies butchered to show diversity. This spook looks nothing like the character. If he was hispanic and looked the part I wouldn’t care. This is just another silly attempt by hollywood to cast blacks in roles they have no business in ala nick fury.
The idiots that call themselves comic freaks and support this crap are a disgrace.

Idris Elba is a great actor and will do a great job in Thor. Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are also in, as well as Stellan Skarsgaard, so the cast is a very accomplished one.
Also, James McAvoy was mentioned early on as playing Bilbo Baggins. I think this would be a great choice, and wonder when they are finally going to make a decision as to who will play Bilbo. My vote's for McAvoy!

Yeah, you're right. The openly racist idiots who call themselves comic freaks are much less disgraceful, obviously.

Shut the hell up you dumb fuck! Unless you can see into the future, wait before passing judgment.

Heimdall (Old Norse Heimðallr, later Heimdallr) is one of the æsir (gods) in Norse mythology, in the Edda called the “white god” (hvítastr ása “whitest of the aesir Sæm 72ª; hvíta ás “white as” Sn. 104).

The White God is a black guy???? Epic Fail!!!

However good an actor Elba is… it’s not about his talent.
He is not anymore suited to play Heimdall than a female actress… than a child actor… than a person with dwarfism… than a fat guy…

Only with race do we turn around and pretend like a black guy playing a Norse God makes sense.

The fact that this POV would be called racist is a pretty good sign that the opposite POV does not have a foot to stand on.

He is a rising star, An “A” list Actor. Eloquent, gifted, talented and regal. Idris has 3 fb sites with over 2,000,000 woman waiting for him to speak daily. American Gangsters, taken, gospel. He is british and distinguish and the most devalued actor I’ve seen. We are waiting for the next DENZEL WASHINGTON an uncompromisingly dominant actor. Obessed was good it could have been better if they went and little deeper into the life of his stalker. We are starved for a astonishing talented and sexy actor of his caliber. Where are all the romantic leads? Where is our Brad Pitt? Majority of his fans are woman but he does gangster movies, scary movies. He doing an alien movie next. Does anyone see us longing for a romantic lead. thor didn’t do anything? He sells hisself so short.
