Exclusive ‘Thriller’ Poster Teases Blumhouse’s Surprise Netflix Slasher, Which Drops This Sunday

     April 12, 2019

Netflix loves to keep you guessing. The streaming service generally uses short-lead marketing, releasing trailers and poster just a few weeks before their new films and series air. But sometimes they get really sneaky! Remember that big The Cloverfield Paradox during the Super Bowl? Just a few weeks ago, they dropped Mercy Black on audiences with no warning, and they’re up to their tricks again with this weekend’s debut of Thriller.
The debut from writer-direct Dallas JacksonThriller is described as an urban slasher that follows a clique of Los Angeles teens in the fight for their lives when the victim of a tragic act of childhood bullying comes calling for revenge. The film debuted at the LA Film Festival last year and now it’s heading to the streaming service for all to see. Bonus; RZA composed original music for the film, executive produced, and acts in the film.

Thriller stars actress/model Jessica Allain and the impressive full ensemble cast includes Mykelti Williamson (Forrest Gump), Luke Tennie (SYFY’s Deadly Class), Tequan Richmond (Ray), Paige Hurd (Everybody Hates Chris), Chelsea Rendon (Starz’ Vida), Mitchell Edwards (The First Purge), Pepi Sonuga (Famous in Love), Jason Woods (Proven Innocent), Maestro Harrell (The Wire), and Michael Ocampo (Shooter). Thriller debuts on Netflix worldwide on April 14th. Here’s the official synopsis for Thriller:

What starts out as a cruel but innocent childhood prank turns deadly when introvert target Chauncey Page (Jason Woods) accidentally kills one of his tormentors. With their friend dead and young Chauncey sent to prison, the children at fault swallow their guilt and get on with their lives as best they can. Years later Chauncey is released. A tall, intimidating figure, his return to the neighborhood conjures uncomfortable feelings for the kids, now teenagers, who fear that he may want to confront them about the horrible past. With their high school preparing for Homecoming and parties and romance at the forefront of their minds, everyone is traumatized when members of their crew start turning up murdered in increasingly gruesome ways. It becomes clear that Chauncey wants far more than a simple apology—he wants revenge.

Thriller isn’t just another slasher film with the novelty of an urban setting and black lead characters. Thriller reevaluates and translates the traditional slasher film story from its roots in 1970s white suburbia to the lives of African-American teenagers experiencing racism, violence and an unforgiving cityscape in modern-day Compton, CA.
