Last June we broke the good news that the 1980s would be making an appearance in the 21st Century with a new Thundercats animated series in the works at Cartoon Network.  Today, we have the first glimpse at new toys and character designs from the upcoming series.  While the image quality may be less than stellar, they provide enough of a glimpse for Thundercats fans to get excited about the series’ premiere later this year.  Hit the jump to check out the new images of Lion-O and company.

[Update: Shortly after posting this story, Warner Brothers Animation sent over the first official image and a short synopsis from the new ThunderCats series.  Find both after the jump.]

Here’s the synopsis:

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

“ThunderCats” is executive produced by Sam Register (“Teen Titans,” “Ben 10,” “Batman: The Brave and the Bold”). Michael Jelenic (“Batman: The Brave and the Bold,” “Wonder Woman”) and Ethan Spaulding (“Avatar: The Last Airbender”) are the producers.

Now back to the original content of the story:

    LLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Very lame. Good luck pulling this turd from the grave. Seriously I owned all the toys and the mask with the claw and sword when I was a kid. Grew up, got nostalgic, bought the original series on DVD, and it was total crap. Not everything from your childhood is as good as you remember it being.

  • Derston

    Lion-O looks way to young.

    • Jay

Agree with Derston, Lion-O looks like the youngest one in the group. I wonder what his voice is going to sound like now. Im officially worried.

READ THE DESCRIPTION GUYS, THIS IS AN ORIGIN STORY.

      • Negro

Lion-O was the youngest in the group the first time around as well. Not including Wily kit and Kat respectfully. I’m not a huge fan of the anime style but hopefully this does what the Transformers animated cartoon didn’t. Be enjoyable for kids AND their parents. And to be a bit optimistic on my end, I read that the original voice actor for Lion-O is returning to reprise the role.

      • Ben

Larry Kenney, who was the voice of the original Lion-O, is returning to the series, not as Lion-O, but as his father Claudis.

WTF happened to Panthro???? OMFG… it’s the new Transformers all over again…

  • film101

What no Kit and Kat or Snarf?

  • Peter

TIMES HAVE CHANGED GUYS. I REALLY LIKE PANTHRO THOUGH! EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS SEEMS VERY INTERESTING AND MY CHILDREN WILL LOVE IT TOO… I HAD TO MUCH BEN 10, TIME FOR STUFF I WILL ENJOY AS WELL

  • H20

They ruined Lion-O. I hope at least they made it so he grows when he activates the sword or something, kinda like he-man.

“Feel the Magic…Hear the Roar….” I can’t wait for the new Thundercats (both show and toys). We should get more news come NY Toy Fair in February.

Not sure if I can get used to the new look, but I’ll give it a shot anyway… I remember I was deeply disturbed as a kid with some stuff like characters and storylines of the original series… I do hope this new version is not kiddie friendly… ergo… boring…

  • Anon

    Cheetara still hot as F****

  • Ale

panthro looks like a guy from gorillaz… what a shame…!!!

Lion-o looks like Zack from FF7

Not crazy about the animé style, but guess that’s what kids like these days. at least Lion-o doesn’t have the swimsuit and go-go boots from the old series. I Like tygra with a gun, and the whole pirate- medieval look of the characters. Hope they have older versions of WilyKit and WilyKat, and they keep Mumm-Ra and the mutants as the main bad guys…..
