Tim Burton Talks BEETLEJUICE 2 and BIG EYES

     May 4, 2012

Doing early press for the black and white, stop-motion animated 3D film Frankenweenie, due out on October 5th, questions for director Tim Burton naturally turned to what he might decide to focus on next.  While we will post that portion of the interview on May 9th, I can say that the nearly 30 minutes of footage that we saw was as adorable, twisted and witty as you would expect, and I can’t wait to see the full-length feature.

When asked about whether or not he’s started to think about what his next film will be, Burton said that he’s going to take a break because he thinks it’s embarrassing that he has three movies coming out this year.  He also talked about the fact that Seth Grahame-Smith is working on writing Beetlejuice 2, and that he might be interested in getting involved depending on what he thinks of the script, and that Big Eyes is in the works, but that you never know what will be ready to go next.  Check out what he had to say after the jump.

tim-burton-beetlejuice-2-sequelQuestion: This is a very busy time for you, with two movies coming out this year that you directed (Dark Shadows and Frankenweenie) and one that you produced (Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter).  Have you started to look forward yet?

Tim Burton:  No.  I think I should [take a break].

Will you have any involvement on Beetlejuice 2?

Burton:  Seth [Grahame-Smith] is writing something.  I just told him, because it was something where I liked the character, he’d probably have a better response.  He has ideas about it, so I just wanted to let him respond to it and see what he comes up with.

Is that something you’d be interested in doing, if you like what he comes up with?

tim-burton-beetlejuice-2-sequelBurton:  If it was interesting.  Although, I don’t know if I would ever know a good script if it bit me in the face.  But, I know what I like, so we’ll see.

There was a rumor about you possibly doing a Pinocchio movie with Robert Downey, Jr.  Is that just a rumor?

Burton:  I’m very busy, aren’t I?  It’s kind of embarrassing that I have three movies [this year].  I’m sick of me, already.  We’ll let these come out, and then I’ll go away and you guys can deal with other people.

Is Big Eyes going to happen?

Burton:  Oh, I don’t know.  There are a lot of projects in the works.  But, when some things are 10 years in the making, you’re not quite sure when it’s happening.

What an interesting guy to interview. He really brings it home.

Uhhggg. Do we really want the Tim Burton of 2012 to revisit Beetlejuice? That’s like imagining a post Air Bender M. Night Shyamalan trying to do The Sixth Sense. The guys who made those great movies are long gone. The only new version of Beetlejuice I want to see is stop action.

personally i think a beetlejuice 2 movie would be great why. people still love the B-man young and old. hes one the original dead guys with superpowers. i’ve seen alot of movies over the years after the beetlejuice movie where the main character or the bad guy is dead comes back to life and somehow has powers unlike no one has ever seen basically trying to kill or haunting who ever ya know.but beetlejuice is one of the original dead guy with super powers just like jason voorhees, freddy krueger & michael myers. if they take a look at the animated series and see how many love the series they should follow the story in the animated series thats the only way to go these days have Lydia and the B-man best friends where B-man is his self but Lydia keeps him happy & busy because half the movie would go before we get to see the B-man and last time he looked bored.so this time have him around from start to finish have him fight some guy thats worse then him.make the B-man feel as he is over the hills, out of order, obsolete ya know. where something happens to Lydia and he has to save her in his own freaky way lol.because the movie wont do so well if they follow the 1st movie having Lydia think the B-man is grossly annoying. people want to see them as best friends because there both weird they deserve each other.show the netherworld more often. have most the story where Lydia travels to beetlejuice’s place just like in the show the story should really follow the animated series.if your going to say no we want it to follow the 1st movie then your out of date dudes let go of that fantasy.if the movie is going to fly in todays world we need 5 things to change 1st the story following the animated series 2nd have someone else play the young Lydia not Winona Ryder cause we all know the story its self will be like 2 or 3 years since the last movie & having Winona Ryder (age 40) play a young Lydia thats probably 20 something will look very weird.3rd the movie will need more of beetlejuices past who is he,whats his real name, when was he alive what happen to him, how he die etc etc. 4th they need to follow the B-mans white and black striped purple inside shirt suite with black long tie just like the cartoon it was a better suit for him not the movie one where he looked like a prisoner from a really old jail movie.5th the movie needs actions scenes every horror movie these days has some more then others because just scaring people isn’t enough people want to see the B-man use his powers to fight someone thats worse then him to say the day in his own way if the movie is gonna have some comedy like last time then we need to see some freakness some horrorness and some action for this movie to fly these days.

Sir, you got it all wrong…Personally, no body wants a typical movie. People want to see something original unlike yourself. People don’t want to see what happened in another movie or another damsel in distress and some hero coming to the rescue. People would like a real comedy movie that has an epic freaky side to it, where beetlejuice (the great ol- a$$hole he is and a creapy pervert) not a zombie heroic man being best buds with a girl who didn’t even like him in the first place.
Movies have to be original not the same as every other movie repeating over and over again. To tell you the truth, that’s kind of pathetic. Nowadays, every movie (except the selective i.e. tim burton movies). You are just stuck in one movie maybe you should watch that over and over again.
The only thing I can honestly say I agree with is that they should show his past and how he died, what makes beetlejuice, beetlejuice. Beetlejuice should never have his character change because he is different from the others, a very unique character, with that his storyline and movie should be as unique as he is.
Winona Ryder would only be in it, if they made it for the purpose of taking years after not a necessarily continuation. She would be great even though she isn’t 20 or so. No one else should play Lydia (opinion).

i left that message months ago and to be honest look at the movies that come out recently almost none of them are original most are re hashed stories being told over and over again were in a generation that old is new why u think hallywood keeps spiting out reboots of old franchises because the fans have been watching the old movies commenting on youtube videos and other websites talking about how they’d love to se new HD movies of some classics hallywood sees this and has been given us fans what we want with the exception of the bad transformer series and indiana jones movie the other reboots have been decent my point is that the beetlejuice character is more famous now people are going to want to see more of beetlejuice now then ever maybe haveing lydia and beetlejuice as friends is a bad idea but any younger fan knows and watched the classic beetlejuice cartoon theres alot of people that want to see them as friends i hate people like u that think u know what people want when i seen comments seen people say the cartoon is the best thing to come out next to the original movie people that dont like the cartoon do not have a funny bone in there body that cartoon is hilarious and part 2 would definitely benefit if they added the cartoons story for the 26 year gap in the storyline i stand by what i said and ur nuts thinking u know what the fans want just cause thats what u want no way beetlejuice 2 may actually be what i said its a smart way to fill the 26 year gap in story they want.
