I can’t believe we missed this tragic news item.  Over the weekend, Deadline‘s Pete Hammond reported that Focus Features wants to give Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy a serious awards season push.  That’s not the tragic part.  The tragic part is that they’re moving the film back from November 18th to December 9th in order to do so.  To be fair, the November 18th date wasn’t easy.  Between The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and Happy Feet Two, it’s sad to say that an adult spy thriller probably wouldn’t make much headway at the box office and it would fade away in the shadow of the heavy hitting December releases.  It should have a much easier go on December 9th where its only big competition is the rom-com New Year’s Eve, the Jonah Hill R-rated comedy The Sitter, and depending on the width of the release, Jason Reitman’s Young Adult.

If you live in the UK you’re still in good shape because the film is set for September 16th.  For those unfamiliar with the movie, hit the jump for a plot synopsis.  Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy stars Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham, and Kathy Burke.

Here’s the official synopsis for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy:

Based on the classic novel of the same name, the international thriller is set at the height of the Cold War years of the mid-20th Century. George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a disgraced British spy, is rehired in secret by his government – which fears that the British Secret Intelligence Service, a.k.a. MI-6, has been compromised by a double agent working for the Soviets.

  1. Wasn’t it already an awards contender? Get your facts straight. Oldman is getting a Best Actor nomination, cause he needs one at this point in his career. Firth will probably be Best Supporting Actor as they may recognize his win as they did with Jeff Bridges earlier this year, but Oldman should be the lucky one in the cast.

  2. Woohoo!!! I’m so glad they did this!!!

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy for Best Picture
    Gary Oldman for Best Actor
    Tomas Alfredson for Best Director

This is gonna be the film to beat this Oscar season.
